Hurrah: Good-bye BBG!!! 🎉🍾💃On 27/6/24 most of the proposed changes to the German Citizenship Act will come into effect, including the removal of the requirement for a ‘Beibehaltungsgenehmigung’(BBG) for Germans aspiring to acquire a further citizenship and become dual citizens, as per the promulgation on 26/3/24 in the Bundesgesetzblatt

The Bundestag in Germany has today (19/1/24) voted in favour of the proposed modernisation of the German Citizenship Act, recommending that the Bundesrat approves the proposed legislation (with minor amendments), including the deletion of Paragraph 25 of the Staatsbürgerschaftsgesetz: if approved by the Bundesrat, and subsequently signed off by the Bundespräsident, the amendments are set to come into effect three months after promulgation…to the great delight of expatriate Germans wanting to become citizens of their new home country…without losing their German citizenship.

Germans who have become Aussies have up to now paid a high price: they lost their German citizenship at the time they acquired, Australian citizenship unless they had managed to obtain a special permit to retain their German citizenship - the ‘BBG’ which involves an arduous application process that has caused much frustration and despair for applicants.
It finally looks as if the requirement for a BBG could soon be a thing of the past
On 30/11/23 the proposed new law aimed at modernising the German Citizenship Act had its first reading in the Bundestag https://www.bundestag.de/dokumente/textarchiv/2023/kw48-de-staatsangehoerigkeitsrecht-979630
Under the proposed law, the paragraph which sets out the current requirement for a BBG - would be deleted.
While this cannot guarantee that the proposed law will be passed without any changes or will come into force by a particular date, it is clearly a big step forward and has raised expectations that it will happen during 2024.

As a consequence, many Germans are wondering, if/when they could/should apply for Australian citizenship without risking the loss of their German citizenship.
