Skimpflation? Not on our watch.

You’ve probably noticed supermarket favourites aren’t quite the same lately, that is same price, smaller serve, and somehow less flavour. That’s skimpflation.

This is when brands quietly cut corners but keep the price the same. One minute it’s “packed with oats and chickpeas,” next minute it’s mostly filler and marketing fluff.

“Carman’s Oat Bars have 10% fewer oats, Chris’ Hommus has 12% fewer chickpeas, and we’re left wondering where the good stuff went,” says Joanna Wells known as the ‘Value Guru’.

So, why’s it happening? Simple. Supermarkets squeeze suppliers to keep prices “stable” on shelves, even when costs rise. Suppliers can’t say no (hello, lost shelf space), so they tweak recipes to survive. It’s not a recipe change but we call it a forced negotiation with a barcode.

And the supermarkets? Oh, they’re at it too with Home Brands, quietly trimming quality while bragging “no price rise.” You still pay $4, but that yoghurt tub’s shrunk, and it’s now 20% more with marketing hype.

At Box Divvy, we don’t play that game. No fake fillers, no sneaky shrinkage just real food from real people. You can see who grows it or manufacturers, what it costs, and where your money goes. Transparency’s kind of our thing because if we ever cut corners, it’d be to fit in more chickpeas.

Woohooo, some good egg news!!!

Eggs-citing!

As of July 2025, Australia has officially eradicated bird flu from poultry farms. All movement restrictions have been lifted and farms are re-building their flocks.
We’re noticing more supply on the market, and Hunter Valley is responding by reducing their wholesale price by another 5% this week – which we are duly passing on. We’re not sure at what price demand and supply will be balanced, but we believe – based on historic sales – that prices should come down further.

In Pantry, the popular DJ&A snack range is complete again - with both the Sweet Potato Mix and Roasted Edamame back in stock. Also, Mt Zero have released their new season Extra Virgin Olive Oil - so both the 2L cask and 500ml bottle are back in stock. Beerenberg and H2G EVOO won't be available until September/October.

In Chilled, we've upgraded the Meredith 80g Dill Chevre to a 150g pack. Soon, the regular pack will follow suit.

What Happens When Farmers Quit — And How Box Divvy Supports Them

One in 3 veg growers say they are considering quitting in the next yearDairy farmers are not the only ones doing it tough. Did you know that across Australia, 34% of vegetable farmers are considering leaving the industry within the next year?
Rising costs, shrinking returns, and pressure from supermarkets are forcing many small farmers to hang up their boots. When growers quit, fresh local food becomes harder to find, prices go up, and communities lose vital connections to where their food comes from.
Adding to the challenge, climate change is hitting local growers hard. Unpredictable weather—droughts, floods, and heatwaves—makes farming riskier and less predictable. Crops can fail or produce less, while pests and diseases thrive in warmer conditions. These pressures increase costs and stress, sometimes forcing farmers to scale back or leave farming altogether.
For most communities, this means fewer fresh, local foods and rising prices.
Here’s the good news: as part of the Box Divvy community, you’re helping change that story.
The Box Divvy community are supporting these farmers by directly purchasing their products, build resilience by encouraging more sustainable farming and providing a steady income. Then farmers have a chance at adapting to climate changes and growing the food we all rely on.

How We Work With Our Farmers
At Box Divvy, we don’t just deliver food — we build genuine partnerships with the farmers who grow your produce. Here’s how we support them:
Fair pay & honest prices: We pay prices that reflect the true cost of growing fresh, seasonal food, not the rock-bottom rates supermarkets often impose. This helps farmers cover their costs and keep farming sustainably.
Collaborative seasonal planning: We work closely with growers throughout the year to plan crops based on what our community wants to eat. This reduces waste and means you get fresher, more delicious produce.
Sustainability & care: We support farmers committed to environmentally friendly practices that protect soil, water, and pollinators — because healthy farms make healthier food.
Open communication: We stay connected with farmers, sharing challenges like weather or pests and working together to find solutions that keep your box full and farms thriving.
Why This Matters to You
You might wonder if ethical eating fits your budget. The truth is, when you shop seasonally, support local growers, and reduce waste, you often save money compared to buying processed or imported food. Plus, you’re investing in a food system that values people, planet, and community.

Every Box Divvy order sends a powerful message to growers: “We see you, we value you, and we want you to keep growing.”

So next time you unpack your Box Divvy fresh fruit and veg, remember: it’s more than just food. It’s a lifeline for farmers, a boost for communities, and a way to eat ethically without breaking the bank.

Thank you for being part of this Unsupermarket movement!

In these times, supporting our farmers, growers and local communities is quite literally the most important thing for our children and future generations.

Once it is gone, getting it back may not be possible.

Excited is an understatement!
This week sees the DJ&A snack range added to our pantry.

These are a huge hit in our house and can often be hard to come by. .. and here I thought I was the only one excited by them 🤷🏽‍♀️

💥The kids absolutely love the crunch and light seasoning.
💥Close to half the price as the supermarkets!!
💥And a huge variety!!

If it is your first time trying any of these, please share your thoughts with us all.

This was a post from the niece of a Norco Milk supplier and I have permission to share.

Proud that Box Divvy supports the Norco families.

A 4th generation dairy farmer put up a post last night as below.

He wasn't as badly affected by the recent floods as others were in the Mid-North Coast LGA, but she thought his message was worth sharing so please read! 🌻

For those who are in a position to pay that little bit extra for their milk and dairy products, it really does directly help our farmers in so many ways! 🤠🐮

💜☔💜☔💜☔

"We supply milk to Norco Milk from our dairy farm here at Stroud Road.
All milk processors across Australia are required to announce their pricing paid to farmers on 1st June each year for the year ahead.
Coming out of the millenial drought, for us to get 1c/L on farm, the shelf price needed to lift by 3c/L. The 'rub' back then was that typically, processors could only directly determine the price of their own brands ie Norco, Dairy Farmers Paul's etc., while the supermarket 'home' brands continued to enjoy an artificial discount, which widened every time a processor tried to increase the price of their 'branded' products.
This practice continues today & typically drives the budget conscious consumer back towards the retailer's cheaper 'own' brand at farmers' expense.
So how can you support the dairy industry following the current flood crisis? It's as easy as paying a little more by choosing to purchase 'branded' products.
Even better, choose to buy Norco products which are 100% Australian farmer owned...where both milk price & share dividends go directly back to farm where it is currently needed."
