When a young person you care about is experiencing intense emotions, challenges in relationships, or trying to navigate the ups and downs that can come with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), it affects both the young person and the people close to them. 💛

BPD is a mental health condition that can affect how someone experiences emotions, relationships, impulses, and their sense of self. While emotional ups and downs are a normal part of growing up, BPD involves patterns that are more intense, persistent, and distressing over time.

Many young people with BPD (or BPD traits) learn new ways to manage emotions, build on their strengths, and live connected, meaningful lives, especially when they have support from family and services. Alongside the challenges, many also bring deep empathy, creativity, and a strong desire for meaningful connection.

What matters most is this: at the centre of the story is a young person who needs understanding, patience, and connection. Your relationship with them can be a powerful source of safety and support.

If you’re supporting a young person and want to learn more, we’re here to help. 💚

As young people grow, their needs and interests can change. They may start exploring new spaces, learning more about themselves, and taking on new experiences. Over time, this can also shape how much independence they seek.

For parents and carers, navigating these changes can involve finding a balance between supporting a young person’s development while also helping them stay safe and on track.

Join our free online text‑based group chat to connect with other adults and explore strategies for supporting a young person as they develop greater independence.

Traumatic events and experiences can take many forms and understanding the impact of them can help family better support young people and respond with care and compassion.

1️⃣ Acute/Single Incident trauma can be experienced after a single, overwhelming traumatic event such as a car accident. Even one experience can have a lasting impact on how a young person thinks, feels, or responds to the world around them.

2️⃣Complex trauma can develop when a young person is exposed to stressful and traumatic experiences over a long period of time. These experiences can build up and affect their sense of safety, relationships, and wellbeing.

3️⃣Vicarious trauma can occur when someone is deeply affected by witnessing or hearing about distressing experiences happening to others, especially those they know, care about, or feel connected to.

4️⃣Intergenerational trauma refers to trauma that can be passed down through families or communities across generations, often linked to histories of injustice, displacement, colonisation or cultural loss.

Every young person’s experience of trauma is different. Taking time to listen and respond with understanding can help them feel supported and less alone. 💚

For many First Nations peoples, conducting or receiving a Welcome to Country is an important cultural practice that has been maintained by First Nations people for thousands of years. A Welcome to Country is an important reminder that we all live on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands and is a mark of respect for Country, Elders, Traditional Owners and Culture.

Here at headspace, we remain committed to supporting the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and to creating spaces where culture is recognised, respected and valued. We know that a strong sense of identity, Culture and belonging is central to social and emotional wellbeing. When Culture is not respected, it can have a deep impact on how young people see themselves and their place in the world.

To any First Nations young people who feel hurt, frustrated, upset or affected by the booing during the Welcome to Country at some ANZAC Day services, we see you. Your Culture is something to be proud of, and it deserves to be respected. If you or anyone you know needs support or someone to yarn with, you can always call 13YARN or Lifeline for crisis support, or reach out to headspace via the link: https://headspace.org.au/online-and-phone-support/connect-with-us/
