Youth engagement skid car project, built by youth disengaged from mainstream schooling
Rockingham PCYC runs a successful Certificate I in Automotive Vocational Preparation for disengaged & disadvantaged youth who have not been suited to mainstream schooling. To encourage engagement; with the support of YACWA, LotteryWest & the local community our students have built a budget skid car, our Holden Gemini, Lil Eshay. These young people are often labelled (Eshay’s) simply for the way th
ey dress. Lil’ Eshay asks you to not judge a book by its cover and a look what we can achieve given the opportunity! This project runs over this year’s 7 x six-week courses, with over 100 young people participating and graduating our program. The average age of our students is 15 years and we have spent just under $9000.00, which is an amazing effort alone. They have stripped and rebuilt the LS1, installed crow-cam with supporting mods, hand ported heads, twin turbos, fabricated body, panel & paint, sourced parts on a budget, lots of custom modifications, wiring, fuel system and much more. This is the first time PCYC has run a project like this, it has been a massive success and is gaining overwhelming support from the community. We hope to be able to continue this every year, engaging more young people, having fun, and creating future pathways to employment for them.
