For a long time now, we've known that being physically active can reduce your risk of developing many types of cancer. Now, more and more research is showing how vital exercise is as a part of cancer treatment.

A new study has shown that myokines (proteins secreted into our blood when we exercise) can suppress tumor growth and even help actively fight cancerous cells.

In the study, patients with prostate cancer did 12 weeks of regular exercise, giving blood samples before and after the exercise program. Researchers then took the blood samples and applied them directly onto living prostate cancer cells.

“When we took their pre-exercise blood and their post-exercise blood and placed it over living prostate cancer cells, we saw a significant suppression of the growth of those cells from the post-training blood.

“That’s quite substantial indicating chronic exercise creates a cancer suppressive environment in the body” said the study supervisor, Professor Robert Newton.

A lot of people assume it's quite difficult to start some sort of movement because of their pain or medical conditions.

In this video, Paul Kirkegaard, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist from Achieve Exercise Physiologists Brisbane explains that there are many ways to start! 🏃‍♀️

An Exercise Physiologist can be a great tool to help break apart some of those expectations and make beginning participation in exercise something that is a really bite sized, manageable chunk.

ESSA AEP Video HD 06/11/2021

Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) is the peak body which regulates the allied health professional group - Accredited Exercise Physiology. Accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs) are 4-year university qualified professionals who play a key role in primary health care because of their knowledge and skills in clinical exercise prescription for the management and prevention of chronic disease and injury.
ESSA has created a short video which showcases some of the projects AEPs are engaged in with Medicare Locals and it also provides some innovative ideas for interprofessional care and future work (e.g. AEPs are increasingly being utilised in the mental health and aged care sectors).

A study by RCSI indicates that exercise is probably the most effective short-term treatment for depression in people with coronary heart disease, when compared to antidepressants and psychotherapy or more complex care. 🚲

The study, led by researchers at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, is published in the June edition of Psychosomatic Medicine.

This is the first systematic review to compare treatments for depression in those with coronary disease and the findings provides valuable clinical information to help doctors determine the best treatment plan for patients. ❤️

The researchers reviewed treatment trials which investigated antidepressants, psychotherapy, exercise, combined psychotherapy and antidepressants, and collaborative care (i.e. treatments devised by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians with input from the patient).

The strongest treatment effects were found to be exercise and combination treatments (antidepressants and psychotherapy). However, as the combination study results have a high risk of bias, the findings of the review suggest that exercise is probably the most effective treatment. 🏃🏻‍♀️ 06/11/2021

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and with over 20,000 people estimated to be diagnosed in 2021, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer is overwhelming and exercise is probably the last thing on your mind... but the research suggests that perhaps it shouldn't be.

Exercise (prescribed by a qualified professional) can help with many of the symptoms and side effects of treatment, and can also help to improve treatment outcomes.

It's important to note that exercise MUST be prescribed by a health professional, like an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, who understands the complexities of exercising during chemotherapy and radiation treatment. If a mastectomy is required, they can also help you to move safely as you recover from surgery.
