Mabo Day: a powerful reminder that sovereignty was never ceded and that First Nations peoples have always belonged to Country.
Every year on June 3, we pay tribute to Eddie Koiki Mabo a proud Torres Strait Islander man and human rights activist who challenged the High Courts and won.
Mabo v Queensland set a precedent in Australian Law, the recognition of Indigenous Custodianship was never acknowledged and the overturning of ‘Terra Nullius’ has been a defining definition in establishing the Native Title Act 1993. Its ongoing impact on current Native Title claims cannot be understated and we at BlaQ would like to highlight why that is!
The Mabo decision is a cornerstone for custodianship across Australia, both land and sea. Over 57% of Australia is currently under Native Title claim or has been successful in its application. Less than 1% of which is based in NSW, this number while disappointing is reflective of the colony we continue to deconstruct every day, your fight for human rights and land rights is important and we thank those who actively participate in rebuilding the system to acknowledge and uplift First Nations people.
As a First Nations Q***r organisation, we recognise that our communities have always existed, always resisted, and always cared for one another. Blak and q***r mob continue to lead with strength, love, culture, and pride.
Mabo Day is not just history - it is living truth, survival, and ongoing resistance.
Always was. Always will be. 🖤💛♥️

National Reconciliation Week is a time to reflect, listen, and take meaningful steps toward justice for First Nations peoples.
As a q***r First Nations organisation, we recognise that reconciliation must include all of us—embracing the strength, knowledge, and leadership of our LGBTQIA+ mob. Our identities have always existed on this land, and our communities continue to shape culture, care, and resistance.
This week is not just symbolic. It calls for truth-telling, accountability, and action—challenging systems that continue to marginalise our people and creating spaces where all First Nations voices are heard, valued, and respected.
We honour our Elders, uplift our communities, and stand committed to a future grounded in justice, pride, and self-determination. 🖤💛❤️

Today, National Sorry Day, BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation acknowledge the strength, resilience, and ongoing resistance of First Nations peoples, and honour the Stolen Generations and their families.
As a q***r First Nations organisation, we recognise the layered impacts of colonisation on our communities, including those living at the intersections of culture, identity, and sexuality. Our people have always held diverse identities, and these stories continue to thrive despite histories of erasure.
We stand in solidarity with survivors, their descendants, and all those continuing the work of truth-telling and healing.
Saying sorry must be accompanied by action—listening, accountability, and meaningful change.
We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and commit to supporting strong, proud futures for our communities.

As 2025 comes to a close, we reflect on a year of resilience and renewal.
BlaQ continues our work towards a future of decolonised knowledge and understanding of First Nations gender and sexuality. Where our stories are heard and celebrated. As BlaQ continues to work towards re-establishing and reinforcing our belonging in 65,000+ years of existence we thank you for walking and dancing alongside us.
The legacy of blak love, kindness and generosity continues through all of us from those matriarchs we farewelled to the dreaming this year! We honour and thank them for all they have done for our communities!
Sending positivity and strength to everyone moving into the new year!
