For the very first time, an Australian city has taken the top position on the annual list of the 50 best cities globally, based on surveys from more than 24,000 locals worldwide and insights from over 100 Time Out city experts.
Melbourne scored highly for its food scene, arts and culture, green spaces, neighbourhood communities, walkability and public transport, showcasing its exceptional qualities. In fact, 94% of locals rated Melbourne’s food scene highly, while 92% praised its arts and culture, reflecting the city's incredible spirit.
The Top 5 cities for 2026 are: 1 Melbourne, 2 Shanghai, 3 Edinburgh, 4 London, and 5 New York. Melbourne had previously reached #2 in 2016, but this year it climbed from #4 in 2025 to claim the top spot, demonstrating its unwavering dedication to excellence.
And it’s not just Melbourne — Sydney ranked #21 and Adelaide ranked #29, meaning three Australian cities made the global list, highlighting the country's remarkable achievements.
