Some places become more valuable in photographs after they’ve changed.
This was the old Altona Pier, photographed during blue hour before it was rebuilt. I know the new pier is cleaner, safer and built for the future, but photographically I still prefer this one.
The weathered timber, the old railings, the repeating lights and all those imperfections gave it a character that is difficult to replace.
At the time, I was simply photographing a familiar local landmark. Now it feels more like a record of something that no longer exists.
Maybe that is one of the things photography does best. We photograph what is in front of us without always realising which ordinary scenes will eventually become history.

Big dreams do come true, and Aarya Surangi is proof of that.
When I photographed Aarya Surangi in my Melbourne studio, his family told me he was working towards a role in The Lion King.
Now that dream has become reality.
A huge congratulations to Aarya, who has been cast as Young Simba in Disney’s The Lion King.
This is such an exciting milestone for a talented young performer, and I wish Aarya and his family every success as he steps into this incredible new chapter.

Happy Mother’s Day
Today is a reminder that the people we love most are often the people we photograph the least.
Mums are usually the ones behind the camera, organising the family, holding everyone together, and making sure the memories are kept. But they deserve to be in those memories too.
A studio portrait is not just a nice photo. It becomes part of your family history. Something your children, grandchildren, and loved ones can hold onto long after the moment has passed.
At David Mullins Photography in Point Cook, I create calm, guided studio portrait sessions for families, mothers, grandparents, and anyone who wants portraits with meaning, warmth, and lasting value.
If Mother’s Day has reminded you that it has been too long since your family had a proper portrait together, now is a good time to book.
