📍Claremont Oval, 6010

Claremont Oval, now officially branded as Revo Fitness Stadium, has been a central part of sporting life in Perth’s western suburbs for almost a century. Before 1925, the site was known as the Claremont Recreation Ground and was used mainly for cricket and soccer. 🏏⚽

The oval was transformed after the admission of the Claremont Football Club (then Claremont-Cottesloe) to senior WAFL competition. The local council invested to upgrade the ground which involved building embankments and a grandstand suitable for league football. The first WAFL match at Claremont Oval was played on 30 April 1927, when East Fremantle Football Club defeated Claremont-Cottesloe. 🐯

A major setback occurred in 1944 when the oval’s grandstand was destroyed by fire, taking with it many club records, trophies and historical items. As a result, new facilities were gradually constructed during the 1950s and 1970s, helping establish the ground as one of the WAFL’s traditional venues.

In the 2010s, Claremont Oval underwent a significant redevelopment. Much of the surrounding land was converted into residential development, while modern football facilities, seating, function areas and community spaces were built. The redeveloped venue reopened as a more compact but modern stadium and continues to serve as the home of the Claremont Football Club, preserving nearly 100 years of football history in the heart of Claremont. 🏆

📍Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Peppermint Grove 6011

Originally known as the Freshwater Bay Boating Club, the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club traces its origins to 1896, local residents came together to establish a boating club on the shores of Freshwater Bay. They built a jetty extending from the foot of Irvine Street with the aim to create a place for recreational sailing on the Swan River. 🌊🌅

In 1903 it adopted the name Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and a clubhouse was constructed on the Irvine Street jetty, allowing it to evolve into an important social and sporting institution along the Swan River. In 1934, the club’s standing within Australian yachting was recognised and as a result was granted the honorary right to use the title “Royal”. 👑

In 1936 the club relocated to Keane’s Point and occupied the historical Cappoquin House, the former residence of Edward Keane. Today, the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club is regarded as one of Australia’s premier sailing clubs. It has produced generations of accomplished sailors, hosted major regattas, and remains a focal point for boating and community life on the Swan River. 🥇⛵

📍Sproule’s Coffee Palace, Cottesloe 6011

The history of Sproule’s Coffee Palace is one I hold close to home. After travelling from Victoria to Perth in 1897, Francis and Elizabeth Sproule became an integral part of the Cottesloe community. ✨

From Francis building homes in Cottesloe (some of which still stand today) to Elizabeth cooking meals for the railway workers, the couple enjoyed the work they did and decided to take their community involvement a step further.

After hiring 20 cooks and renovating their home in 1899, Mrs. Sproule’s Dining Room was open and serving meals to the Cottesloe community. The couple even dug a well in their backyard to supply water to the Mills and Wares Factory and allowed people from the goldfields to regularly lodge in their home. 🍴🏡

In order to keep up with demand, Francis and Elizabeth decided to use the land where their home once stood to build The Coffee Palace Temperance Hotel in 1904, comprising of six single bedrooms and the Sproule family residence on the top storey. 🛎️🛋️
