Patrol teams in the Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra have been BUSY lately, doing everything they can to protect elephants and their forest home.

From fighting fires, patrolling forests and destroying snares... all the way to community education! 🧑‍🎓

Recently, teams held a special awareness day for 22 middle school students, sharing important information about Sumatran elephants and other amazing wildlife that depend on the Way Kambas forests for survival.

They shared all about the work of the River Patrol Team, how they help elephants, and how communities themselves can become part of the movement to protect precious elephants, and help keep their natural home standing and thriving. 🌳

🚒 Exciting news elephant friends – the brand new fire truck is HERE! 🚒

Thanks to your amazing support in our June fundraising appeal, we raised enough money to convert a Toyota Hilux into a fully equipped fire truck, ready to fight fires and protect the Sumatran elephant's home!

In Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra, fires threaten elephant lives every single day, often set by poachers to clear land for illegal hunting.
Now, thanks to you, we have a functioning, dedicated fire truck to race to the frontlines, and put the fires out before they spread.

🔥 These maps show the devastating scale of wildfires burning right now across Indonesia.

The worst-hit regions are Sumatra and Borneo, home to Critically Endangered orangutans, elephants and tigers already on the brink of extinction. These fires threaten their forests, their food sources, and their health, with prolonged exposure to toxic smoke.

Extreme drought, deforestation, and drained peatlands are fuelling the blazes. Scientists are calling it a "Godzilla El Niño", one of the driest seasons Indonesia has experienced in years.

Borneo's peatlands make these fires especially hard to fight. Once drained, peat becomes highly flammable and can smoulder underground for months, producing choking haze long after the flames are gone. And it's far from over – the fire season is expected to peak in October.

Orangutans, elephants and tigers can't escape these flames on their own. Our teams are on the ground right now, fighting to protect them and their forest homes 🧡🐘🐯🦧

To keep the energy of alive, we have the most wonderful story to share, of a young elephant life that you, our community, helped save. 🐘

This two-year-old elephant calf was found suffering from a terrible snare injury. The snare was wound so tightly around his left foot, that it had cut deep into the muscle. The wound was infected and inflamed, he was in terrible pain, and without urgent help, the risk of the infection spreading and turning deadly was high.

But with your help, the Wildlife Ambulance reached him in time. The snare was removed, the wound cleaned, and he was treated with antibiotics.

Then came the moment we hoped for: he successfully rejoined his devoted mother and his herd. 🤎
