CPSU/CSA Branch Secretary, Melanie Bray, took to ABC Radio this morning to condemn the Cook Labor Government's shocking proposal to close and privatise Supported Community Living (SCL) services.

"We've had lived experience of what it looks like to privatise these group homes. Colin Barnett's Government tried to do that a number of years ago and it caused a great deal of disruption and harm in transitioning these homes into private providers."

"These are not just workplaces where jobs will be lost. These are relationships that are broken. These are people who are losing the people who have cared for them and our members who have been the carers for many, many years. Social Trainers who have dedicated careers to working in this profession; some of them who've been doing it for over 30 and 40 years. What we're talking about is the entire death of a public service and wiping out of a profession."

We are calling on Minister Hannah Beazley to shelve this proposal immediately.✋🛑

On top of the 1500 jobs already being cut from public services, the Cook Labor Government is now threatening to close our Supported Community Living homes, leaving 400 workers, including 300 Social Trainers, out of a job. These are more than just residential care facilities for people with disabilities; these are homes where residents who need specialised care can live a full and dignified life with the support they need.

We implore Minister Hannah Beazley to shelve this proposal immediately.

YOU CAN’T CUT PUBLIC SERVICE JOBS WITHOUT CUTTING SERVICES TO THE PUBLIC!!!

The State Treasurer is pretending that she can cut 1500 jobs from public services without impacting the service they provide.

We call bu****it.

There is no way you can cut 1500 staff from the health, education, community support, and public administration services that the State Government are supposed to provide to the people of Western Australia without reducing the actual service that is provided to our communities.

Our tax dollars pay for those services. And the State Government is boasting about a budget surplus. So why are they cutting these services?

This is Government Services shrinkflation. They are straight up syphoning off funds that are supposed to be used to deliver the services our communities need and putting it towards pet projects instead.

Not good enough.

We are continuing to make our voice heard to the Cook Labor Government that cuts to public sector jobs are cuts to public sector services. The 'back room' work that the Deputy Premier; Treasurer referred to in justifying these cuts is essential in ensuring that the front line has the support and resources necessary to deliver services to some of our most vulnerable people.

Make no mistake, we will fight these job cuts every step of the way.
