Two of our Directors, Managing Director Brett Grocock and Geospatial Team Lead Matthew Power have just returned from a week in the Pilbara.
One of our clients needed some urgent survey support to keep a new project moving forward. This included;
- Establishing a survey control network on site
- Set out of early mine infrastructure for the new box cut and ROM pad
- A drone survey for early earthworks progress
- QAQC of historical Lidar data

Whatever your mining project needs, from exploration, through to construction, production and closure, our team of expert mine and engineering surveyors can help!

Welcome to our new monthly discussion post called: Monthly Discussion 😁

was recently engaged to deliver a geodetic control survey for a major mining company out near Laverton.

As part of our planning, we selected a series of State Survey Marks to connect our control network back to the state and national grid. We picked the most accurate and relevant marks, prepped our gear, and headed to site.

Once on site, we were informed by the client that the area surrounding our primary control point was now classified as a heritage area — and we were prohibited from accessing it.

This particular mark has been around since the 1950s, was used as the basis for the site control network, and, up until the mining company’s recent operations commenced, it had been accessible and used by surveyors in the region.

It got us thinking:

-Can a private company deny access to state survey infrastructure on land they now manage?
-What are the legal or ethical implications if that restriction is ignored?
-And what if you’re not working for the company — just regionally nearby — should you still be blocked from using the mark?

We’d love to hear your thoughts — especially from those working in remote areas or navigating similar access challenges.

At Element Geospatial, we’re proud to run high-quality, up-to-date hardware - not just for better project outcomes, but so our team has the tools they need to do their best work.

One of our core values is: “Don’t kill your horse - you’ll need it to get home!” In other words, look after your gear!

was born from too many real-life (and real stupid!) moments where drones, scanners and survey gear were out working hard, whilst their cases sat open, collecting dust like it’s a mine sample.

Dust in the case = dust in the hardware = costly damage down the track.
It’s simple: respect your tools, protect your kit ….. and

Shed Scans are back! The team is gearing up for another round of end-of-financial-year (EOFY) audits.

Using the Emesent system, we can safely and autonomously navigate complex environments—capturing every inch of our clients’ material stockpiles with precision.

The Hovermap scanner can be deployed handheld, vehicle-mounted, or drone-mounted, allowing for flexible data capture even in GPS-denied environments.

This equipment enables us to accurately survey challenging areas like material sheds, delivering high-resolution 3D models and reliable volume calculations.

Black dust is a lot like red dust, it gets in everywhere!

East Coast Team Leader Wild recently visited a coal mine in Queensland to capture baseline measurements for a retaining wall under a tip head that is showing signs of deformation. Using prisms mounted to the retaining wall and laser scanning from our SX12, we safley measured the wall with, and without a loaded truck parked above it to check for deformation.

This marks our first foray into the Queensland coal space and will add to the range of skills that Element Geospatial can bring to our east coast mining and civil clients.

Just throwing out some recognition to one of our Kalgoorlie team legends on her recent achievement in Bali.

Tashka came first in the Sup Surf Comp! What an absolute legend! And this is just scratching the surface on her achievements and what’s in the pipeline for her in the year coming.

Love watching you succeed Tashka!

Well Done to own Brett Grocock for the efforts put in over the weekend for the Margerat River Ultra Marathon.

Brett completed 42kms through forest, trails, beaches across the Cape to Cape coastline and let’s say it’s not for the faint hearted.

Great effort Brett! Can’t wait to see to smash the 80 kms next year, maybe…..

Geospatial was commissioned by a client to assess erosion on waste rock landforms. The assessment utilised orthomosaic imagery, digital terrain models (DTMs) and digital surface models (DSMs) to identify and quantify the characteristics of all erosion features on the rehabilitated slopes.

A total of 2'832 gullies were identified and classified.

The data collections for this project/ report involved the use of a DJI M300 Drone, which was equipped with a L2 Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scanner.

The use of this hardware delivered an outstanding amount of data for our client, including a full understanding of the gully erosion situation, an interactive database with detailed information about each gully, an overview PDF map illustrating the locations and extent of the gullies, and centralised KML locations of the gullies that can be easily imported into GIS software for further analysis.

Element Geospatial have a diverse range of hardware to compliment our skilled surveyors, which in turn delivers the highest standard of survey data, allowing us to tailor to client specific projects.
