Short Back & Sidewalks
We provide free haircuts to Australians experiencing homelessness & poverty.
We work alongside service providers across Australia, providing friendly and attentive hair-cutting experiences with some of Australia’s best hairdressers and barbers as our volunteers. Short Back & Sidewalks currently operates in Western Australia, New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Victoria. Our service goes beyond just giving free haircuts; we create meaningful connections through conv

No big statements just what I’ve seen up close. It’s shifted how I see people, how I show up, and what actually matters. Still learning, still building and only just getting started on what’s to come.
Big shout out to the legends at Joe n Co who continually show up, giving their time, and using their skills to support people in the community doing it tough.
Through our Neighbourhood Cuts partnership with Hawaiian, this work reaches 12 salons across 8 shopping centres in Perth, creating real moments of connection, one haircut at a time.
Grateful for Joe and Co, our salon partners, and for backing this and making it happen where it’s needed most.
It always starts with a haircut - and ends with something more.
A day of real conversations and plenty of laughs at , shared with Short Back & Sidewalks and the team.
More days like this. More people like this.
CALLING ALL HAIRDRESSERS!
Ever wondered what volunteering with SBSW actually looks like?
It’s a couple of hours.
A few haircuts.
A chat with someone who really needs it.
That’s it - simple, real, and genuinely impactful.
If you’re a hairdresser and want to use your skills to support someone doing it tough, we’d love to have you with us.
Send us a message to get involved this year.
Ever wondered what a service day really feels like at SBSW?
Hear it straight from one of our volunteers - .jessb - who jumped in with our St Kilda crew and shared his experience.
For him, it was humbling and eye-opening.
A day full of stories from people from all walks of life.
A reminder of how grateful we can be - and how powerful simple connection is.
That’s what a service day looks like for us.
Connection first, haircuts second.
People feeling seen.
Pretty special stuff.

It was hot, busy and, as always, our service was in huge demand at Christmas Lunch In The Park in Perth.
Thanks to the generosity, patience, and care of our volunteers, we were able to deliver over 100 haircuts, braids and hair colouring. For many people, this was how they spent their Christmas Day and it was great make it one filled with dignity, warmth, and connection.
Craig shared a story about Michael - and the moment someone called him “sir” for the first time.
A single word that landed with so much recognition, dignity and truth.
Moments like that remind us why SBSW exists.
It’s not the haircut.
It’s being seen for who you are.

As part of 16 Days in WA - a statewide campaign calling for an end to family and domestic violence - we’ve been spending time with women’s centres, creating quiet pockets of care through fresh cuts and gentle conversation.
This work matters because feeling seen, safe, and looked after shouldn’t be a rare thing.
And our volunteers showed up with exactly that energy.
