Bid Consultant Milka Bago suggests limiting nominalisations in another handy style tip from our Bid Talk newsletter.

When crafting proposals, clarity is crucial. One common pitfall we see is overusing nominalisation – which is when a verb is turned into a noun (e.g. "decide" becomes “make a decision”). Too many nominalisations can make your writing passive and abstract, leaving your message unclear.

Removing nominalisations keeps your writing sharp, straightforward and impactful. It’ll also help you reduce wordcount if you're working to a strict limit.

⬇️ Here are some examples:

The establishment of an efficient communication channel is of vital importance for the successful coordination of all subcontractors and the timely completion of the project.

Curious about how bid writing compares to copywriting? Copywriter-turned-Bid Consultant Angela Rodgers breaks down six key differences and highlights the skills both roles share.

In tendering, the audience is defined, the deadlines are stricter, and the stakes are much higher – so bid writing demands a different approach. But similarities like strategic thinking, persuasive writing, and careful editing mean that copywriters can quickly adapt – especially with the right training and guidance.

Angela also offers practical tips for bridging the gap, leveraging existing skills, and successfully transitioning from copywriting to bid writing. A must-read for anyone considering this career path.
