Halloween goes way back, starting as an ancient festival celebrated by the Celts over 2,000 years ago! Called Samhain (pronounced “Sow-win”), it marked the end of the harvest season and the start of winter. People believed that on this night, the line between the living and the spirit world was thin, so spirits could visit the earth. To scare away any unwanted visitors, people would dress in costumes and light big bonfires!

Here’s how Halloween traditions took shape over the years:

🕯️ Costumes & Disguises: People wore animal skins and masks during Samhain to blend in and stay safe from mischievous spirits. Today, we still dress up in fun costumes but without the fear of spirits!

🎃 Jack-O’-Lanterns: Originally, people in Ireland carved scary faces into turnips, potatoes, or beets to keep spirits away. When Halloween came to America, they found pumpkins were perfect for carving. Now, we have Jack-O’-Lanterns lighting up homes everywhere!

🍬 Trick-or-Treating: In medieval times, people would go “souling,” visiting homes to offer prayers for the dead in exchange for treats like soul cakes. This eventually turned into the tradition of trick-or-treating, where kids go door-to-door for candy!

👻 Spooky Stories & Symbols: Halloween has always been a time for stories and symbols tied to the spirit world, like friendly ghosts, witches, and black cats. These spooky but fun symbols remind us of Halloween’s mystical roots.

Over time, Halloween evolved from a harvest festival to a fun holiday for people of all ages. Now, it’s a mix of costumes, treats, and family fun that brings everyone together to celebrate all things spooky! 🧙‍♂️🍂 Happy Halloween!
