๐Ÿฆท Why are dental procedures often performed later in the day? ๐Ÿฆท

Have you ever wondered why your pet is admitted in the morning for their dental procedure, but the procedure itself may take place later in the day?

One reason is that dental procedures are considered "non-sterile" procedures. While all of our dental instruments are thoroughly sterilised and strict hygiene protocols are followed, scaling teeth creates a fine aerosol containing bacteria from the mouth.

To help maintain the highest standards for surgical patients, we generally perform sterile procedures (such as desexings and other surgeries) before dental procedures. This reduces the risk of bacterial contamination within the surgical environment.

Your pet will still be admitted in the morning, where they will receive a health check and be prepared for their procedure. They will be closely monitored throughout their stay, and our team will ensure they are comfortable while awaiting their dental treatment.

This scheduling helps us provide the safest possible environment for all of our patients whether they're coming in for surgery or a clean smile! ๐Ÿพโœจ

Sunday Diet Deep Dive ๐Ÿพ | Hypoallergenic

For pets with true food allergies, a standard diet just wonโ€™t cut it.

Royal Canin Hypoallergenic diets:
โœ” Use hydrolysed proteins
โœ” Reduce allergic reactions
โœ” Support skin and digestive health
โœ” Are often used in food trials

โ“ Common questions weโ€™re asked

โ€œCan I give treats?โ€
Usually no, unless vet-approved.

โ€œIs this a lifelong diet?โ€
Sometimes, depending on diagnosis

This diet should only be fed under guidance from the vet and can be life-changing for pets with chronic issues.

๐Ÿพ Retractable Leads ๐Ÿพ

We recently saw a fantastic post from our friends at Perth Veterinary Emergency and felt it was an important message to share.

While retractable leads can seem convenient, they can pose risks to both pets and people. The long, thin cords can make it difficult to maintain control if your pet suddenly bolts, becomes frightened, or approaches another animal. They can also cause injuries such as rope burns, cuts, and even entanglement injuries.

For busy areas, roads, parks, and around other pets, a standard fixed length lead often provides better control and helps keep everyone safe.

Every pet and situation is different, and we understand retractable leads may work well for some owners in certain environments. The most important thing is choosing the safest option for your pet and using it responsibly.

Winter Pet Confessions ๐Ÿคซ

Letโ€™s be honestโ€ฆ winter changes routines and we love hearing your confessions of the things we do for our pets in winter!

We will go first:

'I let my dog on the bed and she takes up most of the bed. I am so uncomfortable every night, but it is worth it because she is comfortable and warm ๐Ÿคฃ'.

No judgement here, we see it all! ๐Ÿ˜‚
Tell us your petโ€™s winter confession below ๐Ÿ‘‡

Which makes it even more impressive how effortlessly they manage to ignore you when you call their name!

Selective hearingโ€ฆ itโ€™s a real talent in the canine world. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿถ

Sunday Diet Deep Dive ๐Ÿพ | Sensitivity Control

Itchy skin, ear infections or ongoing digestive issues can sometimes be linked to food sensitivities.

Royal Canin Sensitivity Control:
โœ” Uses selected protein sources
โœ” Supports skin barrier health
โœ” Helps manage food reactions
โœ” Supports both skin & gut health

โ“ Common questions weโ€™re asked

โ€œIs this the same as hypoallergenic?โ€
Not exactly, itโ€™s designed for sensitivities, not true allergies.

โ€œHow long before I see results?โ€
Skin improvement can take several weeks.

If your pet is constantly itchy or has recurring tummy issues, diet may be playing a bigger role than you think.

๐Ÿพ Nails ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ Keeping your pet's nails short is important for their comfort and mobility, but we understand it's not always as simple as just doing a nail clip!

Some pets are nervous about having their feet handled, and if nails have become quite long, it can take time to safely shorten them. The blood vessel inside the nail (the quick) grows along with the nail, so trimming them back to a healthy length is often a gradual process.

In these cases, we may recommend nail clips every 6 weeks for 2โ€“3 visits to encourage the quick to slowly recede, allowing the nails to be shortened safely over time.

If you are nervous about doing this, give us a call, and we can certainly help, we want the process to be as stress free as possible.๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑโœ‚๏ธ

Rainy Day Walk Guilt

Does anyone else feel guilty when skipping walks when itโ€™s raining?

The truth is, missing the occasional walk wonโ€™t harm your pet. Some pets are happy to sleep at home an extra day. However, some dogs NEED that stimulation. What matters is replacing it with enrichment at home.

Try:
โœ”๏ธ Short training sessions
โœ”๏ธ Indoor games
โœ”๏ธ Food puzzles
โœ”๏ธ Sniffing activities

A 10-minute brain workout can equal a long walk, which is super great to know!
