Small Actions. Big Climate Impact ๐Ÿซถ

๐ŸŒ This World Environment Day, you donโ€™t have to do something big to make a difference.
โœ” Reduce chemicals in your garden
โœ” Pick up litter and discarded fishing gear
โœ” Plant natives to support local ecosystems
๐ŸŒŠ Healthy rivers are part of climate action.

A pelican riding out last weekendโ€™s wild weather on the South Perth jetty โ€” calm, resilient, and right at home on the Derbal Yerrigan.
Healthy waterways support incredible wildlife like this โ€” and itโ€™s something we can all help protect, even through small actions like keeping litter out of drains and being mindful of what washes into our river.

Check out this incredible synchronised swimming! Spotted by Dolphin Watch volunteer Trish from the Mount Henry bridge on the Djarlgarro/Canning river last weekend, many thanks to her for sharing this stunning footage ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉต

๐Ÿฅณ It's National Volunteer Week this week! ๐Ÿฅณ
This year's 'Your Year to Volunteer' theme certainly hits the mark for River Guardians - we're sending all our volunteers, and volunteers with partner organisations, a massive squeezy heartfelt THANKYOU for everything you do!
You clearly demonstrate the love and care local communities feel for our precious river and estuary systems - giving countless hours to empty and maintain Reel It In fishing gear bins across the state, monitor dolphin populations in Perth, Mandurah, and Broome, remove litter from and revegetate our shorelines, look after injured wildlife, and educate others to care and act ๐Ÿ’š

We see and are grateful for you all - you're the best!!

๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿ‚ Wrapping Up the Autumn Monitoring Season in Derbal Yerrigan and Djarlgarra ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฌ

Our final survey of the autumn season was memorable, with sightings of most of the resident dolphins across the estuary under favourable conditions.

๐Ÿฃ And just when we thought the season couldnโ€™t get any betterโ€ฆ a third calf has been confirmed!
This time to Click, who turned 10 years old in March and is now entering motherhood for the first time.
First-time mothers face an important learning period, and calf survival can be lower compared to experienced females. These early months are critical as maternal skills develop and both mother and calf adapt to the challenges of a dynamic estuarine environment.

Seeing three calves born over the autumn season is a very encouraging sign for the local dolphin community and highlights the importance of ongoing monitoring and conservation efforts in the Swan Canning Riverpark.

โš ๏ธ As always, please remember to give dolphins plenty of space (at least 100 m away, as per regulations), especially for mothers with young calves during these early stages.

A rewarding end to the season, and we look forward to continuing observations into winter ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿฌ

All photos and observations were collected under permits.

As you probably know, we're passionate about connecting young people with our rivers and waterways and helping them see these places as spaces for curiosity, discovery and care.

From school excursions to hands-on programs, we love to see students outside observing wildlife, exploring ecosystems, and learning how their actions can make a difference.

With over 1000 people joining us across the morning, it was a joy to bring together organisations, passionate volunteers, partners, families and a whole flock of curious kids for conversations, hands on activities and plenty of river nerdery along our beautiful Perth riverside ๐ŸŒž

Our team said the community questions were a standout, hearing everything from the big scientific curiosities like โ€œHow do microplastics move through the river system?โ€ and โ€œWhy do black swans choose certain nesting spots?โ€ to the wonderfully imaginative contributions from our youngest river guardians: โ€œDo turtles have best friends?โ€ and โ€œDo fish sneeze?

As our River Guardians Program Manager and event coordinator Jason Menzies put it,

We hope everyone who joined us enjoyed the day as much as we did ๐Ÿ™Œ
