From a family steeped in horses to becoming a specialist producer of meadow hay, Rhys Yuill of Limerick Farms has plenty of experience to bring to the tonight’s show. 🌾

With eventing, showjumping, racing and polocrosse all part of the family history, horses have always been a big part of Rhys’s life, while his passion for agriculture eventually led him to build Limerick Farms into a major producer of meadow hay for the equine market.

So what actually makes good hay? What should horse owners know about testing, quality and annual ryegrass toxicity? And how is the hay season looking this year?

We’ll be chatting with Dolly van Zaane, whose remarkable 50-plus-year career in the horse industry has taken her from a riding school in Amsterdam, to an Arabian stud in South Africa, and eventually to some of Australia’s most influential warmblood breeding programs.

Dolly began working with horses at just 16, but it was many years before she was able to buy her own horse. From that first mare, she went on to develop the DVZ breeding program in Western Australia, with a lifelong passion for genetics and breeding.

We’ll talk about the importance of the mare line, some of the horses Dolly bred that went on to success in dressage, jumping and eventing, and the legacy her breeding program has left for the next generation.

What a fantastic community effort! 👏 It’s great to see the members of Leschenault Men’s Shed putting their skills to work to restore this beautiful old sulky. They’ve done an amazing job bringing it back to life, and we love that it will soon be back in the show ring🐴

A fascinating guest on Talking Horses this week! 🐴🎙️

Tonight we’ll be chatting with Dr Sarah Sly of Coastal Equine Vet in Geraldton, whose journey to becoming an equine vet has taken her from California to Hawaii and eventually to Western Australia.

Sarah has an interesting story to tell, and her work sees her and her team treating horses across the Geraldton region, as well as heading on twice-yearly trips into the Gascoyne, Murchison and Pilbara, providing veterinary services to horses in some of our most remote communities.

We’ll talk about life as an equine vet, the challenges and rewards of the job, what it’s like providing veterinary care across such a huge area, and what reproduction season looks like in regional WA - along with plenty of other equine topics.
