OCCURRENT AFFAIR currently showing at Artspace Mackay and touring nationally.
OCCURRENT AFFAIR is a major exhibition featuring new and recent works by Brisbane-established Aboriginal artist collective proppaNOW, featuring Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Richard Bell, Megan Cope, Jennifer Herd, Gordon Hookey and Laurie Nilsen.
Conceived as a collaborative activist gesture, OCCURRENT AFFAIR will address current socio-political, economic and environmental issues, while celebrating the strength, resilience and continuity of Aboriginal culture.
โQueensland as criminal is a key theme of OCCURRENT AFFAIR, now on at the newly reopened Artspace Mackay until October 6. The travelling retrospective of Brisbane-based Aboriginal artist collective proppaNOW has come north for its penultimate stop before ending in Lismore. But if the state is a villain, the groupโs six artists are the stars of the show and collectivism itself is a hero.โ - Zoe Devenport

Dennis Golding | ๐๐๐๐๐ โ ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ช๐ด ๐๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ currently showing at Bondi Pavilion Art Gallery and touring nationally.
๐๐๐๐๐ โ ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ช๐ด ๐๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ is the result of a collaboration between artist Dennis Golding and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Alexandria Park Community School. Students from Kindergarten to Year 12 designed their superhero capes with iconography informed by their lived experiences and cultural identity.
As superheroes, Golding and his young collaborators are empowered and reminded of the strength of their culture in forming their identity and connection to Country. Individually and together, the capes critique social, political and cultural representations of contemporary First Nations experience.

๐๐ช๐ต๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐บ solo exhibition by Svetlana Bailey
โIn this work I combine alternative photographic techniques with sculpture making. I produce moulds to substitute forms made of transitional materials like water and ice to create arrangements that I photographically preserve. These materials allow contemplation of body and land and the makeup of a post-human future.โ โ Svetlana Bailey"

๐๐ช๐ต๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต ๐ฎ๐บ ๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐บ solo exhibition by Svetlana Bailey
The abstraction of the body as vessel and as medium is a constant in Svetlana Baileyโs practice. And the bodies depicted in Baileyโs work are made all the more personal as they belong to the artist herself and her family members. The metamorphic, faded, and transmuted body parts were all cast, moulded, or photographed from the bodies of her mother, her father, her partner, her daughter, and her own self. They represent what it means to inhabit the body, in our own consciousness, and what we might be without our bodies.

Available to view at artereal.com.au from 27 October - 24 November
