Reflecting on Reconciliation ahead of National Reconciliation Week, highlights the crucial strides still needed. While acknowledging the Albanese government's commitment, she notes unfulfilled promises post the Voice referendum, emphasising the necessity of Truth-Telling and Treaty.
Despite the referendum's outcome, the 40% 'Yes' vote offers a positive sign of ongoing support for reconciliation. Garlett stresses the critical role of implementing truth-telling to foster understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture, starting with acknowledging historical injustices.
She urges the WA Government to lead the way with more truth-telling projects and advocates for constitutional recognition at the State level, alongside embedding Indigenous histories in education at all levels.
Garlett also underscores the importance of mandatory cultural awareness training and place-based reconciliation that respects the diversity of Indigenous Countries and Traditional Owners. Addressing challenges like the heckling at ANZAC Day ceremonies and the media's deficit narrative requires a shift towards strength-based storytelling and proactive "Reconcili-action."
As Reconciliation Week approaches on May 27 to June 3, Garlett reminds allies that reconciliation is the responsibility of the State, and invites us to show our support and celebrate the journey together.

Our Director, Emma Garlett is a finalist in the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards WA for the National Indigenous Times Indigenous Community Leadership Award for her work founding and leading Garlett Group!
"I dream of a day when we will have no gap to close, parity with employment, great health and an educated community. I know this day will come. I work everyday to make it happen with guidance from my Elders, alongside my community, and my incredible team at Garlett Group."
"I am continuing what was started long before my generation. The trailblazers who forged the way are too many to name, and many have since passed away, but never forgotten. And those Indigenous leaders who are still championing this work need to be celebrated. Our allies who have walked with us to champion our causes, I thank you walking with us on this path" she said.
We are thrilled to celebrate this achievement alongside three other outstanding First Nations finalists Sophie Coffin, Joshua (Flewnt) Eggington and Thomas Betts.
