Happy Mothers Day!

The West Australian Rabbit Council crew are down at Bunnings Midland today cooking up Mother’s Day sausage sizzle!

Because nothing says “thanks Mum” quite like a snag in bread and someone else doing the cooking.

And yes… Kylie’s in charge of the chalk board, apologies in advance.

Binky free Trevor. You inspired, educated, loved and laughed with the most incredible warmness that is rare in this world.

You will never be forgotten.
💙💙

In Loving Memory of Trevor Turner🕊️

The rabbit world has lost one of its brightest lights. Trevor was more than a rabbit person, he was a mentor, a gentleman, and a true Prince Charming to his beloved Sally. Together, they shared a love story straight out of a fairytale, often found at rabbit conventions across America along with travelling to show across Australia, enjoying crazy nights out with friends, enjoying magical moments at Disneyland and sharing a love for the animals they cared for on their property - where it is to be noted, Trevor’s horse Mia was totally better than Sally’s.

Trevor’s passion for rabbits began in the 90s and helped shape the future of our hobby in Australia. He was one of the founding members of the South Australian Rabbit Club in 1999, a man who believed in fairness, community, and doing everything by the book. His dedication built the foundations that many of us still stand on today. In recent years he kept Mini Rex, held the position of Treasurer and Show Secretary for SARA and along with Sally, they bought the Australian Championship Rabbit Show back to life, an event of which he was really proud of, because he was just so passionate about all states sharing and coming together to show and learn and return to being one team.

He and Sally proudly worked with the first Harlequin rabbits in Australia, helping to develop the Jersey Woolies in the early 2000s, even being the first to exhibit and win with them. While his heart belonged to the Mini Rex, he always had a soft spot for those sweet little Woolies.

As a rabbit judge, Trevor had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued. His kind manner, sense of humour, and genuine love for the animals (and the people who cared for them) made him truly unforgettable.

He was a father, grandfather, and “deer dad”(you knew I had to mention his beloved squeaky) adored by family, friends, and rabbit fanciers across the world. His luscious hair, cheeky personality, adoration for Sally and warm hugs will be remembered by all who knew him. He fought so hard through the pain and fear for so long and put his love of rabbits, people’s needs and the dedication for the rabbit community in the forefront even when he was struggling.

Rest easy, Trevor. Your legacy will live on in every show table, every new breeder you inspired, the love you gave to Sally, the stories left with your friends and every bunny whose story began because of you. 💐🐇

We miss you Trev your memory and with that you, remain alive in all our heads.

🙋🏼‍♀️Hello! Just reposting this fact about the Filavac Vaccine for your information.

This last weekend we had several people, clubs asking if the Filavac dose can be halved or quartered or if there is any “extra” amount left after drawing up 0.5ml can it be used on another rabbit and if the dose is the same for all rabbits whether giant or dwarf as it was advised by a vet that it could and the advice seems to have spread through numerous chats/groups with people asking the same question.

It’s actually a pretty good question! Because there is a huge difference between a 7kg giant and a 900 gram dwarf, so you can see the reasoning behind the question.

However, in true WARCI form, we like to go straight to the source to get the correct information for you.

Please see below, portion of email received from Ceva on behalf of Filavie, in response to my questioning rabbit size vs single dose rate.

————————————————————————

“We have previously been asked this question and Filavae has advised that the correct dose rate for any size of rabbit is 0.5mL as a reduction in dose volume will reduce the amount of antigen and thus reduce the immune response and efficacy, some vials appear to have more liquid than others, this doesn’t mean there is more inactivated vaccine, it just means the “liquid carrier” is more, the entire contents must be used on the single rabbit you are administering it to, not split up as “extra”.

See below advice from them on this question -

"As Filavac VHD K C+V is an inactivated vaccine, dividing the dose by 2,5 means having 2,5x less antigen administered to the rabbit at 0,2ml/D and thus efficacy at risk.

Only administration of 0,5ml/D guarantees efficacy. There is no additionnal risk on safety when administration of 0,5ml/D on a smaller rabbit."

———————————————————————

So in short… all rabbits are to receive a single 0.5ml dose or THE ENTIRE CONTENT OF THE VIAL, irrelevant of breed/size.

If new knowledge comes to light and a different dose rate/recommendation comes into play, the supplier/label will advise.

If your vet says different, please ask them to contact the supplier/manufacturer to confirm. Please also be aware, Australia is still in the learning phase for this vaccine, don’t criticise vets/ rabbit owners who might not have a complete understanding of the protocol.

Education is key, vets are afterall trying to help you.
