Fishing Wild Magazine
Welcome to Fishing Wild Online. Fishing Wild magazine is dedicated to adventure fishing travel - and like no other on the market.
Given its superb quality, in depth coverage (some articles extend to 20 pages or more) and major emphasis on stunning photography it is little wonder that Fishing Wild has been referred to as the ‘fishing version’ of National Geographic magazine and caused a sensation and rave reviews amongst the fishing community and media organisations. All articles are commissioned to ensure the highest possibl

Threadfin salmon can be finicky creatures. Bathurst Is in the NT is a well known hotspot for them with most game fishing records coming from Second and Perakery Creeks. At times they are very frustrating, often refusing lures presented in front of their noses. One lure that did work was the Lucky Craft Pointer. Read about the techniques in the latest No 19 edition of Fishing Wild. Also read of how Bathurst island Lodge now has a 1 metre threadfin club in recognition of the mighty threadfin.
After starting off what became known as Barra Base back in the 1980s (the first guided fishing lodge in northern Australian history) it was great to return after all these years and sample the threadfin again.....

Other than the great info in the 'Everything You Need To Know About Catching Peacock Bass' article in the latest No 19 edition of Fishing Wild magazine (the one with the threadfin salmon on the front cover shown below and available on the news stands or by subscribing), I detail a radical new marlin technique that has been utilised to great effect by Eddy Lawler of Peak Sportfishing in Exmouth. His technique involves very light drag pressure and catching big blues in only 5-10 minutes. Eddy has skippered anglers to more blue marlin in Australia than anyone else and when I went out with him we achieved a 100% hook-up to landing ratio - something normally unheard of with marlin fishing. Read about the radical new technique in the article "Blues On A Budget"!

Some of the stunning scenery in the Arafura Swamps. There are plenty of crocs in the system. Plus one of the boats hooks up a barra on the rock bar.
By the way, the next edition of Fishing Wild is due into port around the 7th May. As such it should be on sale about 2 weeks after that.

Just back from a trip to the new Dhipirri Lodge near Milingimbi in the NTs Arnhem Land. This pic is a shot of Pip Clement who was guiding there. On his day off with me (and 2 other guides having a busman's holiday) he caught this great threadfin on fly. Guide - Jason Rogers knew of a thready gutter and he was proved correct. The lodge itself is very comfortable with accommodation units fabricated out of shipping containers (windows cut in, insulated and air conditioning). The food was right up there with the best I have had at any lodge...anywhere. Well done Jo!
The fishing started off slow with big tides but got better each day. Two cyclones seemed to have upset the lay of the land a bit. It was great to experience the Arafura Swamps from a boat. The bird life and scenery was stunning (fishing for barra amongst palms etc). The surprise packet was fishing around a labyrinth of islands near Milingimbi...an absolute maze of estuaries. We enjoyed some nice sessions there and they tell me it goes off big time in the build up of Oct- Nov. Over the next little while I'll post some more images from the trip...

Well, I haven't posted in quite some time as I have been flat out with my move from Perth to a new posting in Kununurra - a dream location for fishing, photography, exploring, camping and birds....The image with this post is fishing near the King River Wyndham with the magnificent Cockburn Ranges as a back drop. It's been a poor wet season so far but it's not over yet...so here's hoping for another tropical low or two.
I have changed the publication times of Fishing Wild by a month , so that it will now come out in May and Nov instead of April and Oct. It's always been hard to produce the April edition (which goes to the printers in Feb) with many in the fishing industry away during Jan holidays. That extra month will make it far easier to produce without a mad rush. The May edition is currently being printed.
As you might expect the coffee table book 'The Fishing Wild' has slowed after strong sales before Xmas. If anyone is seeking a copy you can simply go on line at www.fishingwild.com.au to order your copy. I'm pleased to say that it has been receiving rave reviews...

Here is another image (a storm approaching the Siltstone Islands in the Kimberley's Strickland Bay) that made the shortlist for 'The Fishing Wild' coffee table book but didn't make the final cut. Don't forget of you order your copy (www.fishingwild.com.au) within the next day or so you will receive your book before Xmas. No one has been disappointed - quite the opposite in fact....

Thank you for all the kind comments about the new 'The Fishing Wild' coffee table book. It's proving a great hit coming up to Xmas. I have posted a photo I really like that was short listed for the book but didn't make the final cut. Indeed I short listed an incredible 1700 images! Originally it was going to be 260 pages but I just couldn't leave some images out so I increased the page count to 280. That equates to a book of 2.3kg!
For those in Perth I will be undertaking a book signing at Bluewater Tackle World Scarborough store on Sat 20th Dec from 9.30am and at Dymocks Garden City (Booragoon) from 2pm Sun 21st Dec. Feel free to come by and have a chat. For those scratching their heads about a Xmas gift for their partners - it's a no brainer isn't it? For people that can't get to the stores the book (signed) can be ordered on line at our website at www.fishingwild.com.au It will make someone really happy for Xmas!

Just back from fishing with Eddy Lawler of Peak Sportfishing Adventures in Exmouth. We managed blue marlin every day with the top day being 3 up to 230kg plus tagged and released. I'm battered and bruised from being thrown around in rough conditions (20-20knots mostly) in only a 25' Contender, but it was worth it for some marvellous images (to be published in the next April edition of Fishing Wild). Eddy employs a radical technique for fighting fish which resulted in a 100% conversion rate for us (you will read about it in the next issue). In the meantime I attended the opening of Halco's new premises in Freo and the launch of my coffee table book "The Fishing Wild" which has been selling like hotcakes. Seems a lot of people out there know what will make a great Xmas gift!!...
