For many years, menopause was viewed primarily through the lens of hot flushes and night sweats. However, emerging research is helping us better understand that the decline in oestrogen during perimenopause and menopause may also have significant effects on the brain.

Oestrogen plays an important role in supporting neurotransmitters involved in mood, cognition, motivation and memory, while also helping to maintain healthy neural connections. As hormone levels fluctuate and decline, many women report symptoms such as brain fog, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, low mood, reduced motivation and disrupted sleep.

Current evidence suggests that, for appropriately selected women, commencing Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT/HRT) during the perimenopausal or early menopausal years may offer benefits beyond symptom relief, including support for cognitive function, quality of life and overall wellbeing. Importantly, many of the fears surrounding hormone therapy stem from older studies that are now recognised to have significant limitations, and our understanding of hormone therapy has evolved considerably over the past two decades.

Every woman’s experience is unique, and treatment decisions should always be individualised following a comprehensive assessment of symptoms, health history and risk factors.

Today was spent immersed in learning at the Australian Aesthetics Symposium…

One thing I truly love about this industry is that it is constantly evolving. New technologies, new products, new research, and new ways to better support our patients are always emerging, which means the learning never stops.

As a Registered Nurse, I believe ongoing education is not optional in aesthetics…it’s essential. Every symposium, workshop, conference, and hour of professional development helps me continue to provide safe, evidence-based, ethical care to my patients.

Today was filled with inspiring conversations, innovative products, advanced treatment discussions, and so many opportunities to expand my knowledge even further. It’s incredibly exciting to be part of an industry that is moving forward so rapidly, while also remembering that patient safety, natural results, and holistic care should always remain at the centre of what we do.

I am grateful to continually learn, grow, and evolve-not only as an aesthetic practitioner, but as a nurse.
