Assisting people up from the floor: oh the techniques I have seen.
There is a range of strategies from using one chair, two chairs, lots of sofa cushions to equipment such as hoists, chair raisers and air assisted devices. If PD in this area is of interest to you then email me

I will be working in a remote location this week: so a timely reminder that there are additional risk factors to consider in locations with limited services and weather hazards

In problem solving with a therapist about a suitable sling to trial I was informed:

In this particular aged care facility under a mixed scheme arrangement due to her disability, the facility is not open to using a loop hoist as they utilise the same clip hoist for all other clients in the facility

This could be seen as not a reasonable and practical solution to a manual tasks hazard. The Interpretative Guide to reasonably practical states that if a product is on the market in Australia then it should be considered available. Not allowing workers access to the best solution means they are exposed to additional hazards and higher risk for a convenience for the facility.
The therapist has advocated several times.
The Interpretative Guide is a bloody good read for some key lines that can help you with justifying equipment.

I have been deeply moved on the passing of Neale Daniher. I never knew him, I did think he seemed a great guy and I have been impressed by how he has turned an illness into an 'opportunity'. The way he has harnessed and foccussed efforts for a cure for MND is outstanding.
I have done some training for carers of MND in the past and was always a training session that really tugged at my heart strings.
I wish the FightMND team, the MND Australia Association and all the state versions an abundance of support and good luck in their endeavours.
