It’s almost that time of year again.

🐋🧑🏽‍🩰📸

The annual humpback whale migration is well underway. Each year, thousands of humpback whales leave the icy feeding grounds of Antarctica and begin one of the longest migrations of any mammal on Earth.

No amount of reading, watching documentaries or viewing photographs can truly prepare you for the moment you have an encounter with a humpback whale.
To share space with an animal so immense, yet so gentle and aware is something that stays with you long after the encounter ends 🐋🧑🏽‍🩰📸

With World Oceans Day around the corner, I wanted to share a few of the ocean animals that have completely captured my heart over the years (minus a few).

Photography has given me a deeper appreciation for the incredible diversity that exists beneath the surface and a reminder of just how much there is still to learn, understand and protect.

We owe everything to our oceans.

One of the most incredible behaviours to witness underwater.

When plankton becomes highly concentrated, manta rays begin barrel rolling through the water column; repeatedly looping back through the same dense patch of food. It’s like watching the most perfect underwater ballet 🩰🩵

Looking at animals the way I look at everything through a lens: art, lines, shapes, light, texture.

It’s fascinating how quickly we try to make sense of what we’re seeing. Remove the context and spots become a night sky, eyes becomes a landscape, skin becomes a pattern.

A few cropped stills. Can you name all the featured species?
