๐ŸŒ๐ŸŽจ Celebrating Indigenous Culture in Pre-Primary

Young Learners Discover the Richness of Indigenous Culture

Teaching Pre-Primary students about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their art and culture is an important part of building respect, understanding and appreciation from an early age.

As part of their learning, the Pre-Primary students at AIC Thornlie participated in hands-on art experiences inspired by Indigenous Australian culture. They created scratch art on boomerang shapes and explored dot painting techniques to recreate the colours and patterns of the Torres Strait Islander Flag. These activities provided students with an engaging opportunity to explore Indigenous art forms while learning about their cultural significance.

Through stories, artwork, symbols and hands-on experiences, children can begin to develop an understanding of Australiaโ€™s First Peoples and their deep connection to Country, community and culture. These experiences encourage curiosity, respect and a sense of belonging while helping young children appreciate the diverse cultures and histories that make Australia unique.

๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿšถ PPB โ€“ Thornlie Library Visit!

Our Pre-Primary B students at AIC Thornlie had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Thornlie Library and participate in an engaging story session.

The walk to the library provided a valuable real-world learning experience, allowing students to connect with their local community while reinforcing important road safety skills. Throughout the journey, students practised safe road-crossing procedures, discussed road safety rules, and developed their early numeracy and literacy skills by recognising and reading the numbers displayed on letterboxes.

At the library, the children enthusiastically listened to two stories read by the librarian, fostering a love of reading, developing their listening and comprehension skills, and encouraging their imagination. The visit concluded with a creative monster puppet craft activity, where students expressed their creativity and practised their fine motor skills.

Experiences such as visiting the local library help nurture a lifelong appreciation for books and literacy while promoting confidence, curiosity, and positive engagement with community learning spaces.
