Taking in words of wisdom and plenty of jokes from “Baba”, former military head of state and twice democratically elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, retired Gen.Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, during our trip to in Perth, September 2018.

I love this is very interesting and heartwarming and thought provoking top ten. In my personal very subjective Lived Experience of the past 55 years on earth, the top 10 countries are the same but the order is different: 1. Liberians, 2. Nigerians, 3. Sierra Leoneans, 4. Gambians, 5. Ugandans, 6. Guineans, 7. Ghanaians 8. Ethiopians, 9. Kenyans, and 10. Chadians.

I don’t say this much, but credit where credit is due: I feel humbled, privileged and grateful to be part of the senior management of the African Development Bank Group at this time in Africa’s history. Several Liberians such as Dr.Romeo Horton and President William V.S Tubman were instrumental in the foundation of the African Development Bank in 1964. My parents knew them both and so I am honoured as a Liberian to be contributing to carrying forward the baton in my little way. The African Development Bank Group’s investment in regional infrastructure in Africa is the largest of any institution on this continent (yes larger than the World Bank too!) and our work in advancing regional integration across the board is unmatched. This makes the in me most proud and happy.

Say what you may about them: it’s my personal opinion and experience that among Francophones the French have good manners that the Belgians lack. Les Françaises disent « bonsoir et bonjour ». It must be a true sign of my 6 years recently living in France that like a Français it rankles me that my « bonsoir » or «bonjour » is met with a blank stare and rude silence from a neighbour!

Congratulations again to Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) for winning the 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership. In his inspiring lecture following his receipt of the prize in Lagos, AAA called for a new era of leadership in Africa and Nigeria to transform the continent’s potential into prosperity:

“We must deliver a better Nigeria and a better Africa for this generation and for generations to come. Given the high level of poverty in Africa and in Nigeria, what is needed are welfarist policies that exponentially expand opportunities for all, reduce inequalities, and improve the quality of life of people”.
