With the pandemic & general worldwide unrest, World Mental Health Week is as significant as ever in raising mental health awareness & resilience.

Does good architecture improve mental health?

Research shows that “green exposure”- visual and physical access to green space (open space with vegetation and / or water) results in stress reduction, mood elevation & emotional well-being. Architecture which facilitates green exposure through space, light & geometry will uplift emotions & improve mental health.

The Swiss-French architect, industrial designer, urban planner, painter, architectural writer & modernist icon was the definitive thinking (wo)man’s architect who left no stone unturned in his exhaustive 5 decade exploration of bold & inventive design ideas for the modern era through a collection of iconic projects, including:
- Villa Savoye (the house as a “machine for living” or beautifully expressed industrial functionality).
- “The Radiant City” Town Planning Concept (apartment blocks, free circulation & abundant green spaces for city dwellers regardless of economic status).
- Unite d’Habitation (thin & linear “slab” apartments with minimal footprints & maximum sunlight, air & views for 1000+ inhabitants).
- The Notre-Dam du Haut Chapel in Ronchamp (sacred architecture as sublime sculpture).
- Chandigarh (monumental town planning & government buildings for democracy).

Even when you designed badly, you did it well. We thank you Le Corbusier!

TODAY IS WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY:
Created by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1985, the 2021 theme is “Clean environment for a healthy world”, addressing issues involving housing, public spaces and their relation to climate change and the pandemic. According to UN-Habitat 1.6 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing. Let’s get to work!

Great news folks! Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye has been awarded the Royal British Institute of Architects Royal Gold Model. Shout-outs were broadcast for Sir David’s rational yet buoyant designs, built around the world, by his advocates Bono & President Obama. Image from www.designboom.com.

Sublime majesty Canal Rocks.

Canal Rocks is a series of granite rocks in the Indian Ocean just off the coast situated approximately 4 kilometres (2 miles) south of Yallingup in the South West region of Western Australia. The Noongar name for this place is Winjee Sam.
