🔵🔴🔵 SENIOR GAME RESULTS 🔴🔵🔴
It was a big weekend for the Southern Lions, full of hard work, strong ex*****on, and great teamwork, and it was brilliant to have the support right there from the sidelines.
At The Den, the Reserves were in a tight battle against Rockingham. It was the kind of game that comes down to the details, and in the end the Lions dug in to secure a 34 - 31 win, a result earned the hard way. Team captain, Craig Atthis named Man of the match.
The Colts kept the momentum rolling, finishing with a 31–10 win. You could see the effort in every phase, and it was great to watch the boys keep building and trusting their systems. Friday Toko named Man of the Match.
In Third Grade, it was a tough afternoon against Rockingham, with the Lions going down 0–34. While the scoreboard tells one story, the growth and commitment through training still show. Connor Atkin named Man of the Match.
🔴🔥 BIG Thank you to The Gate Bar and Bistro for sponsoring our Senior team vouchers. 🔴🔥

🟡⚫️🟡 RUGBYWA REGIONAL GIRLS TRIALS 🟡⚫️🟡
There was a fantastic showing at the Rugby WA Regional 15s Trial this past Sunday, with 15 Southern Lions girls proudly representing the club. It was brilliant to see so many young women taking the field in 15 a side rugby alongside players from a range of clubs, all coming together to showcase the strength and future of the girls’ game.
A big congratulations and best of luck to all the girls trialling for regional selection. We hope to see many of them continue their journey all the way through to senior rugby. It was also wonderful to see such strong support on the sidelines, with plenty of Lions supporters backing the girls every step of the way.
Moments like this highlight exactly why growing the girls’ pathway matters. It helps build opportunities, strengthens the game, and ensures more players have a clear and exciting route from junior rugby into the senior ranks.

U8 Blues took on Rockingham today in what was definitely a fresh start to the morning — both the parents and kids were certainly feeling the cold!
Rockingham came out quick with the ball and wasted no time taking advantage early, putting on a few fast tries. But to the Lions’ credit, the boys kept fighting hard right until the final whistle.
There were some excellent plays throughout the game from Isaiah and AJ, showing great determination and teamwork.
Player of the Day goes to Ethan, who week after week has shown determination and effort every single game. Today it all came together with some fantastic runs and strong defence. A well deserved effort!
The game finished in a draw, which was a great result after such a tough contest. Well done boys!
Shout out to some of the older club players who helped get us going with the club song !

What an effort from the boys today!
Once again they gave it their absolute best out there. Amazing tries, massive tackles, and absolute heart right to the final whistle – even when they were running on empty 💪
So proud of the way they stuck together and kept fighting. That’s what being a Lion is all about.

Game 4 vs Rockingham Purple
The kids got back to winning ways with a good display.
There was lots of good running in attack and some better spreading out in defence.
Mia got her first try in only her second game and nearly had two.
Our player of the day was Jimmy who had an awesome game.
Not sure who we are playing this week but will update when the fixtures come out.

Another great game the kids showing some awesome determination in the second half to go down by only 4 points.
I love watching them get around each other and the belief start to show in themselves it’s great to see as a coach.
Some great work done this week by forwards and backs alfie clearing out some great rucks. Odhran, Matai, and Kingston having some great runs and Boston putting in some great defensive tackles.
Player of the day goes to big silver playing out of his skin yesterday with some awesome runs and helping get the ball out wide and always with a smile on his face. Watching him come in a bit late to the team and getting around his team mates and putting in the work at training has been really great to watch. Well done See you all Tuesday
Cheers

What a performance today! The forwards stepped up and were absolutely dominant against a big side, and we came out of the blocks firing right from kick off.
There were some great phases of play throughout, with the boys showing real hunger to contest at the breakdown. We are really pleased with the progress this week. After last week’s loss they bounced back brilliantly and worked together as a genuine team unit.
One thing that really stood out was the positivity across the group. The boys are demonstrating a team dynamic that usually takes a long time to develop. It is something to be proud of.
Player of the Day this week was a tight call, but Talon gets it. He played across three positions, put in a hard shift at lock, ran straight through the guts and bumped a player off, and then finished it all off with a brilliant try on the wing from almost the full length of the pitch. Outstanding.
Some other mentions this week. Mason B and Jack showed some great kicking form. Fletch and Manu put in a huge two-up tackle. Big Jack went on a massive run. And Anaru, brilliant scrummaging for your first ever game, welcome to the group mate!
Great effort from all involved. See you at training!

Hope you've all had a great weekend.. Thank you all so much for getting down to the Den to support the kids on Saturday..
In the context of our season, last weeks game was a pretty pivotal one for us.. It was always going to be a massive test and a good gauge of how we're travelling as a group in comparison to one of the top teams in the competition.. Wests are a team that I fully expect to be in the finals race again this year, they're well coached, physical at the breakdown, play very direct through their Forwards and have plenty of class out wide.. So we knew we'd have to muscle up to stay in the contest and we really appreciated your support from the sideline.. Thanks..
Sitting here today I'm super proud of the kids, the game was exactly as we anticipated and as we played through the plan it unfolded pretty much as we expected.. I like to measure our performances on a couple of areas that I call "best team principles" rather than the scoreboard.. The team who controls their emotions the best wins, was that us?? Did we play for each other?? Or did we go off on our own?? Did we quit?? Or did we stay in the fight until the final whistle?? I could happily tick all those three boxes this week and it looks like the kids are enjoying playing within that framework too.. We had a couple of work-on's for us to take into the weekend around our offside discipline, our footwork through contact and our body height when carrying in close.. We didn't concede any offside penalties this week and I was loving the way we carried the ball!! So I was extremely happy with that effort..
Dre was our Player of the Match.. I loved how adaptable Dre was this week.. I unexpectedly had to throw him into the starting lineup at the last minute as Wiremu had a groin ni**le that was giving him some grief.. Dre was incredible!! He ran himself into the ground in the first half, his workrate off the ball was first class, had a couple of carries that broke the game wide open and as we've come to expect, on D, Dre was putting solid shots on and making dominant tackles that swung momentum in our favour all morning.. Sensational job Dre!!
Match Day Points:
3 Points: Dre Grant
2 Points: Ruben Welman
1 Point: Steven Le'Ota
Final score: Southern Lions 31 - Wests 14.
Huge thank you to Samantha for taking care of our scoring and subs, Derek for running the touchline again and Lauren for organising our oranges and lollies.. Lauren, I've got your tupperware container at home too.. I'll bring it next week.. Very much appreciated.. Thanks..
Just before I run, I ducked up to UWA this morning to watch our girls Jasmine, Faith and Hope play their Regional Trial Game.. They were in there with the U/16 and U/18 girls and considering they'd only been together for a few weeks, there was already nice combinations developing and the quality of play was sharp as.. As you'd expect at that level, there was some absolute guns out there on the field and our girls didn't look out of place at all, which was very cool.. I'm sure they all would have liked a few more minutes, but they didn't waste any either.. I could hear Jas's voice from 50 meters away, saw her make a couple of very solid stops on D, she had a handful of strong gainline carries and her work at the breakdown is always on point.. Here's wishing the girls all the best of luck with the selection process..
I better run, take care and I'm looking forward to catching you on Tuesday..
Cheers,
Duncan
