From carrying servers through Perth city on a weekend, to crawling on hands and knees to fix a server located under a staircase and rolling out a phone system with eagles overhead in Sharkbay….our very own Senior Consultant, Matt O’Donohue, seemed to have done it all in the name of great IT!

This year marks Matt’s 17th year with us, having previously worked at Fujitsu, where his work as an infrastructure engineer got him interested in servers, Linux, RedHat and of course to Open Systems Support.

“Having always loved problem solving, I was attracted to the way OSS liked finding clever ways to use technology to fix things, and how they’re honest and collaborative with their clients,” said Matt.

“Since then, a day is never the same. One minute it is server infrastructure, then virtualisation tech set up, digital transformation, data migration, disaster recovery and business continuity planning with advanced troubleshooting in the mix.”

“Throughout it all, I’ve really enjoyed the challenge and the opportunity to work with some awesome WA businesses and organisations.”

If you’re not catching Matt living and breathing IT, you can definitely spot him continuing to support, eat and drink local - one his most favourite past time - with his gorgeous family.

A recent federal government report estimated Australia would need another 11,000 cyber security specialists over the next decade, highlighting the importance of keeping our IT systems and operations even more secure and safe.

With a growing trend of working from home, reports have also shown that phishing emails have increased by an eye watering 630%!

Our very own Tom Clarkson - who also works from home from time to time - shares his top tips on how all of us can stay safe from cyber attacks when working from home.

"When working from home - and indeed from anywhere, including your offices which might already have cyber security systems in place - there are easy and extra things we can all personally do to protect our organisational and personal data. Easy wins for a better peace of mind," said Tom.

"That includes enabling multi factor authentication, installing endpoint protection and being extra careful with emails from unknown sources or content that gets you senses up. If it does that always go with that feeling and don't open it."

Well it has been a while (one year to be exact according to Facebook) since we posted any updates here.

As is the case with many WA businesses and especially within the IT sector, the last 2 years has been about navigating the way we work and do business in the eye of a global pandemic. For our team members at Open Systems Support, this has been even more impactful through our work supporting, empowering and securing connectivity and access that allows for remote work and a new way of operating.

As together we now move beyond the height of the pandemic, our team continues our commitment to working with, and for WA businesses and communities.

We look forward to sharing their success stories, supported by proactive and innovative IT solutions.

In the meantime, we say a BIG thank you for WA businesses, organisations and communities who have put their trust and confidence in our 25+ years of experience. We look forward to further contributing to your successes.
