Recently, I needed a breast examination. Anyone who has experienced this will know that there is a level of anxiety that goes with an appointment like this.
I was led into a changing area, it was nice enough, clean, given a blue gown and a shopping basket to ‘hold my belongings’.
I had to sit with other women in blue gowns, and shopping baskets in the waiting room without a bra on, feeling awkward.
After the scan, I had to wait in the room again… it got me thinking, it would be very easy to make this experience much more dignified for women. Could they not have installed small lockers in each change room? How about a wicker basket? Could they allow you to just undress in the examination room? I mean it takes like 1 minute to undress?
Could they have some tea and coffee in the waiting area to ease some of the anxiety people are feeling going into an appointment like this? And how about notice of how long the wait will be for the results?
When we as businesses and services think creatively, with empathy and actually understanding of the lived experience of our customers, we can create an interaction with our brand that is truely unique and distinctive.

When you think about how your brand will look, do you decide that based on your likes and dislikes or do you think about your prospects? What about the offers you create? Your ideas of what you think people need, or *actually* what people want and desire?
How familiar are you with the struggles your prospects have and what is going to trigger a sale for them?
There is a fine balance between brand focused and customer centric businesses and it’s important you are working with someone who understands both.
When considering how you will communicate with your prospects, you must think about the noise they are already experiencing and how you can best stand out in that noise, and ultimately, why your prospects should care.

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of working on a logotype design and custom display font for ad agency . Their client was a large Superannuation merger and I was engaged to refine the logotype they had started developing and create a custom display script for use with the new brand.
I’ll share some more of the finished artwork in another post soon but for now, feast on these WIP pics!

This may be contentious but hear me out...
It’s true that you can turn on skill and technique as required, the ability to layout a document, facilitate a workshop, build a house…but creativity, no, that can not be switched on and off when required.
Creativity comes from having space and time, it comes from allowing shower thoughts to develop, moments to marinate. Creativity comes from nurturing creative living and thinking and preserving space for creative work and play.
Ever wondered why those brands are standing out? Being memorable, clever, noticiable? It’s not that their designers are more skilful, it’s that they have the budgets and time to let creativity flourish, ideas form and play happen.
So it’s fine to say, I have limited budget for design or branding, that is ok, but we can’t also expect creative magic in that same request.
So what can we do as brands?
1. Work with your designers or marketing peeps to build time for creative play and exploration. To create unique solutions requires marinating time.
2. Believe in possibilities, don’t be limited by what already exists.
3. Work with folks who are already nurturing creative play and curiosity in their lives, this naturally will flow through to your brand and work.

Hai!👋 I’ve missed you all. If you follow me you will see I’ve been busy over there lately. I’ve got some exciting things happening with creative play and supporting other professionals to bring this into their lives. Interested? Check out that feed or drop me a DM.
Today, I wanted to share something I’ve noticed and something that has bothered me for a long time, and that’s this need to “stay safe”. Not in the “don’t cross the road without looking” sense, but in the “we are just going to do what others are doing and hope our business blends in” sense.
And this is where trouble happens. This is where you start bobbing on the sea of sameness 🌊.
I speak with brands and designers regularly who choose to use the same colours, same fonts, same stock images no matter the client. Their brief starts with “we love this about our competition… can we do the same”.
Nope, no, nada. We are can’t, I won’t. 🚫 Branding is your ticket to shine and connect on a creative, unique level. And I want you to really think about this when you are building your brand and communications. Can we stand out here, what can we do that’s unique to us, that’s different but better? How can we use creative thinking to solve our customers problem in a way people rave about?
So, I’m dropping in today to give a virtual butt kick 🍑🦵🏼to say, this week, look at your clients and their pain points and brainstorm one way you can be more creative in connecting with them!

Sameness… blergh.
Bored of everything looking the same? Logos, brands, fashion etc?
Yeah, me too…
Designers the world over have forgotten how to play. Brand and company directors are scared to stand out, be visible.
I get it. It feels risky.
But here is the catch, it is more risky to fit in, go un noticed, un defined.
When we embrace creative play, we give ourselves and our brand, an opportunity to connect with audiences on a level unique to the brand itself. We allow space for magical connection and joy. We create emotive messages and communication pieces that fuel interest, that stand out that create IMPACT!

Here is where brands are going wrong…
We are not utilising the random creativeness that 90s music film clips had.
Why are brands so straight down the line? So logical?
Do you remember what brand had the advertisement where a gorilla was drumming ‘in the air tonight’?
Yeah, you do, because it was unexpected, our brains attention was switched on and we remembered it because it wasn’t logical or rational! It appealed to our lizard brain and made us pay attention.
Brands today are too safe, are too logical, are too homogenous.

✨Brand reveal✨
Working with Tallgum has been a real pleasure. They came to me last year with a long and confusing business name, a broad and undefined target market and no real brand identity. They had been in business for over 2 years and things had really started taking shape and they knew they needed to up their brand image at a minimum.
Over several online workshop sessions we clearly identified their minimum viable market, we simplified their brand direction and core messaging and clarified their brand personality, tone and of course, brand identity!

📢 Absolutely f*cking exhausted, but happy!…

But actually, here I am, here WE are. The eve of Christmas 2021… probably looking different to what you thought last year? Do we ever know?
I don’t have the energy right now to recap the whole year. It was massive. I know there were some fantastic moments and some bloody terrible ones. As is the ebb and flow of life.

… then she said “when you speak about money, everything changes in you”…
My sister raised this with me yesterday and I wanted to share my first thoughts:
First thought: hmmm, she has made an interesting observation. I am curious about this.
Thought two: It’s obviously a money mindset issue, is the person to ask!
This my friends is the value of positioning.
Positioning your brand is the act of building associations and connections between what you do/offer/solve and for who.
So, at that time a person thinks they need help or a solution, your brand instantly pops into their mind.
When you are fluffy on your positioning, when you think everyone is your market, you loose any hope of building those strong connections and demonstrating your expertise.
Do you struggle with positioning? Do you feel it’s crystal clear?
And yes, the observation really was interesting and something I will be exploring in 2022! (Thanks Rose!) 🙌
