From Pioneers to Proprietors: Celebrating Indigenous Leadership in Zambian Adventure Tourism 🧗‍♂️🇿🇲

This week on the Nugget Junction Travel Podcast, we are highlighting a powerful shift in the adventure tourism landscape in Livingstone, Zambia.

We recently visited the legendary Abseil Zambia, home to the world’s very first commercial Gorge Swing. Established in 1998, this site has long been a rite of passage for global adrenaline seekers. Today, it represents something even more significant: 100% indigenous ownership and leadership.

We had the distinct honor of sitting down with a true icon of the Zambezi, Kulu (Alec) Banda. Kulu’s career is the definitive history of Zambian adventure tourism. From starting as a porter in 1981, hauling gear out of the steep basalt gorges, to becoming a pioneering professional river guide with Sobek—and now co-owning and transforming Abseil Zambia—Kulu’s journey is a masterclass in resilience, mastery, and professional evolution.

Why this story matters for our industry:

Sustainable, Local Impact: By transitioning to indigenous management, Abseil Zambia is ensuring that the economic and operational control of one of the world's premier adventure hubs remains in the hands of the local experts who know the gorge best.

Knowledge Transfer: Kulu and his partner are not just running an activity hub; they are mentoring the next generation of guides, blending world-class safety standards with deep, generational knowledge of the Zambezi.

A Living Force: As Kulu reminds us, the Zambezi is not a destination to be conquered—it is a living force that demands respect, precision, and humility.

From the 94-meter vertical abseil to the heart-stopping 160km/h Gorge Swing, we put it all on the line to experience the transformation firsthand. But more importantly, we learned that the future of adventure tourism in Southern Africa is being shaped by those who have spent their lives navigating its currents.

If you are interested in stories of indigenous entrepreneurship, sustainable tourism, and the evolution of the adventure industry, this episode is a must-watch.

"Roads of Freedom"

For Africa Freedom Day

_From the Nugget Junction Travel Podcast_

We’ve logged the miles on red dirt roads,
From Cape to Cairo, dust in our throats,
Heard stories whispered ‘round the fire,
Of chains that broke and hearts that soar higher.

Africa Freedom Day — we pause, we sing,
For every nation that found its wings.
From Addis ‘63, a continent stood tall,
One voice, one drumbeat, answering the call.

We’ve heard the griot in Mali strum his tale,
Watched sunrise spill gold on Kilimanjaro’s trail,
Tasted freedom in the salt of Zanzibar’s sea,
Felt it in the laughter of children, wild and free.

It’s not just history in a museum glass,
It’s the beat in the matatu as the city rolls past,
It’s the market hum, the border crossing’s grin,
The courage that says, “We begin again.”

So here’s to the land that raised us all,
To every flag that rose after the fall,
To the roads we travel, the songs we share,
Africa — your freedom lives in the air.

Happy Africa Freedom Day. Keep roaming, keep remembering. 🌍✊🏾
