Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Beaufort Street Book Club's Christmas party. What a fun night at the Hyde Park Hotel with the erudite readers of the Beaufort Street Bookshop book club.

Good wine, lovely nibblies, good questions and even some live jazz drifting in from the bar to set the tone. Thanks to the wonderful Barbara at Beaufort Street Books How we love our independent booksellers who have a genuine passion for writing, and are supportive of WA writers.

As a writer I specialise in a fresh retelling of the stories that Western Australians thought they knew. The pearlers of Broome. The CY O’Connor tragedy. And now, the Spanish Benedictine monastery at New Norcia.

My books are enjoyed for their filmic nature and ironic humour, but my secret aim is really to seduce the reader into learning and reflecting a bit on the history of the western third of the continent. It’s a history little understood even by the folk who live here, and different to anywhere else on earth due to its vastness and remoteness.
