The following advert popped up in my news feed and I thought I'd make a PSA on how to tell a genuine piece of tech from a cheap knock off.
The first thing of notice is the first bullet point "Stop Theft"; no camera is able to stop a theft, it can be a deterrent but it won't physically stop the theft.
The second is the tagline "Buy it before they get banned in Australia". The only reason it would be banned is if it doesn't work and enough people complain about it.
The third thing to stand out is that there is no brand name on the camera.
Now these 3 claims should be enough to put anyone off from looking any further, but a quick look in the comments proved this not to be the case, so the next thing to check is the company.
A Google of "Gadgetox review" doesn't give us a whole lot to go on, flicking through Google pages I noticed that they have a lot of different Top level domains (.com/.co.uk/.ie), all with the same logo, so they operate worldwide. Trust pilot gives them a good score, but they're not featured on productreview.com.au or reviewcentre.com
Having only 1 review source is concerning as it can be manipulated but is not necessarily a nail in the coffin for the company.
Next I clicked on the link. I did this because I was confident that Gadgetox is an actual company, if you can't find any mention of a company online, do not click a link that they provide.
The thing that jumps out at me now in the second photo, is that there is still no brand name on the Camera, just "Mini spy cam HD". To add to this, scrolling down the page, there are no hardware specifications. This means that we are unable to search for reviews for the specific model or hardware.
There is also an enticing "40% off" on the page. This is totally worthless when we don't know a model number or what type of hardware the camera has inside.
Last but not least, there is only 1 review on the product. Now if we go back to the very first line on the Facebook ad, it states "These mini cameras are spreading all over Australia". If that was the case, it would be reasonable to expect more than 1 review, especially on their website.
Following this train of thought can help you assess shopping from all Facebook ads. If you think it is helpful in any way please share it and help another who might be in need :)
