Me: "Sure thing. Let's see what we're dealing with."
(Tests power point, finds it's missing a neutral then removes power point)
Rat: "That was the most delicious electrical cable I've ever eaten, thank you!"

This one was wild! The cable was chewed through perfectly so as not to trip any power. The client might have never known if they didn't try to use the power point!

Hello fellow human beings! Luke here, L*D Electrics. It's been a minute or two since my last post so I thought it was time for another.
While installing a power point at a client's house recently I came across some rather old, dangerous and outdated electrical wiring. The original cable that was used was black in colour but had deteriorated and started to disintegrate over time, leaving behind exposed wire (one of the many reasons why roofspaces should be isolated before entering) and had become a big ole fire hazard. Thankfully I spotted this and set about removing/rewiring the roofspace to make it safe again.

While doing an electrical installation at a clients house, I found a number of these monstrosities (unenclosed electrical junctions, first picture) lying freely about in the roof space! These are very unsafe (big fire hazard!) and electrical regulations require all electrical junctions be covered with a junction box (white box, second picture).

I made an ALARMING discovery at a client's house the other day. Their smoke alarm continued to chirp even after the battery was replaced. On further investigation I found that all the smoke alarms in the house were 8 years out of date! Holy dooly!
FYI it is recommended that smoke alarms are replaced every 10 years because the sensors can become less sensitive to smoke particles over time and this could lead to them not operating properly in the event of a fire.
You can check the date yourself by observing the 'date code' on your smoke alarms at home. This date code is in the format DD/MM/YY and will tell you when the smoke alarm was manufactured and then you simply count forward 10 years. Other alarms will simply have a 'replace detector by' date. See below picture which shows both examples in the bottom left corner.
