Rafael Dantas

Rafael is a charismatic Brazilian vocalist with deep roots in samba and the driving voice behind Perth’s beloved Pagode dos Amigos. Known for bringing the soul and swing of Brazil to every stage, Rafael now joins Perth Choro to celebrate the rich tradition of choro, lending his expressive voice to classics inspired by masters like Pixinguinha. Maira Trindade

Maira is a Perth-based Brazilian singer and songwriter who brings the elegance of MPB, samba, and bossa nova to the local music scene. Originally from Porto Ferreira (SP), Brazil, she has over a decade of experience as a performer, including winning Brazil’s Garagem do Faustão and collaborating with various ensembles both in Brazil and Australia. Known for her expressive voice and deep connection to Brazilian repertoire, Maira is a prominent presence in Perth’s live music community. On the 25th of April, she presents a special tribute to Cartola at Kidogo Arthouse as part of the Choro Day celebration.

Ricardo Steyer

Ricardo is a Sydney-based Brazilian 7-string guitarist deeply rooted in the language of choro, where his playing reflects both tradition and refined musicality. A dedicated student of the great Fernando Cesar, Ricardo brings a rich understanding of the 7-string guitar’s role, blending bass lines, harmony, and melodic counterpoint with elegance and groove. Since relocating to Australia in 2012, he has become an active presence in the Brazilian music scene, performing across a range of settings while championing choro and MPB.

Ricardo will be a special guest on the 25th of April at Kidogo Arthouse for the Choro Day celebration.

Emily Gelineau

Emily is an Australian musician known for her versatility, moving effortlessly across jazz, pop, rock, and global styles. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, she has a strong connection to Brazilian music, especially choro, where her expressive playing brings out the genre’s intricate and conversational character. Now based in Perth, she continues to explore diverse musical landscapes and will be performing at Choro Day on the 25th of April at Kidogo Arthouse.

Joshua De Silva

Josh is a Perth-based guitarist and vocalist known for his distinctive fingerstyle technique and raw, expressive voice. A graduate of the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, he brings a fresh approach to both contemporary songs and classics, drawing on the Brazilian choro tradition and the virtuosic style of Yamandu Costa. Influenced also by Charlie Hunter, Josh has developed the ability to play guitar and bass simultaneously, creating a rich, layered sound as a solo performer.

He’ll be joining the lineup for Choro Day on the 25th of April at Kidogo Arthouse.

Mayuka Juber

A versatile and expressive instrumentalist, Mayuka Juber brings together a rich background in classical clarinet and jazz studies at WAAPA. Over the past two decades, she has performed across Australia with groups such as Apricot Rail, Mister and Sunbird, and Formidable Vegetable.

Now part of Western Australia’s choro scene, Mayuka highlights the clarinet’s unique voice in this tradition, fluid, lyrical, and full of character. Catch her at Choro Day, on the 25th of April at Kidogo Arthouse.

Join us for a special celebration of Choro Day, honouring the birthday of the legendary Pixinguinha, one of the founding figures of Brazilian music. Set in the stunning and iconic Kidogo Arthouse in Fremantle, this unforgettable evening features two vibrant, jam-packed sets, with a sunset interval - perfect for enjoying a glass of wine with friends overlooking Bathers Beach.

The program weaves together the rich tradition of choro with timeless samba classics, showcasing music by masters such as Cartola, Candeia, Noel Rosa, Donga, JoĂŁo da Baiana, and more.

Led by Perth Choro, the night also welcomes special guests: Brazilian 7-string guitarist Ricardo Steyer (Sydney), alongside Brazilian vocalists Maira Trindade and Rafael Dantas. Together, they bring to life the spirit, rhythm, and history of Brazil’s musical heritage.

Today we had a colourful little visitor, a Rainbow Lorikeet, and of course we had to play Tico-Tico no Fubá for him. The song couldn’t have matched the moment better: a tiny bird happily helping himself to our food.
