Our purpose is to make a difference by developing natural resources, improving people’s lives now and for generations to come. We produce bauxite, alumina, aluminium, copper, metallurgical coal, manganese, nickel, silver, lead and zinc at our operations in Australia, Southern Africa and South America. Thank you to everyone who joined us for Hillside Aluminium's 30th anniversary, including President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Trade and Industry Minister Parks Tau, local and provincial leaders, members of South32’s leadership team, and many of Hillside’s past and present employees.

Officially opened by President Nelson Mandela on 19 April 1996, Hillside was part of an ambitious vision by South Africa’s new democratic government and industry to grow industrial capacity and create jobs, bolster international trade and contribute to local downstream beneficiation.

The Hillside Aluminium smelter is located in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, about 180 kilometres north of Durban. It is the largest aluminium smelter in the southern hemisphere and only primarily producer in South Africa, producing high-quality, primary aluminium for domestic and export markets.

By strengthening local supply chains, stimulating downstream manufacturing and reinforcing government’s priorities to grow the economy and create jobs, Hillside has been a powerful catalyst for growth.

🏆Congratulations to the team at South32 Cannington Mine who have been recognised as our Q3 FY26 Safety Guarantee Champions for their work to address a high consequence safety risk through deliberate, engineering led controls.

Following severe weather and flooding, movement and structural concerns were identified in the portal can area, creating a long-term safety risk that required more than short-term controls - so a cross-functional team from Mining, Geotechnical, Engineering, Maintenance, Small Projects, Emergency Response and Underground Operations came together to develop and deliver a permanent remediation solution.
