An article via Geomotion Australia highlights that failures of tailings dams are one of the most hazardous processes that may occur, and can cause extensive damage to life, property, and health. Some failures of dams can be attributed both to the combined effect of rapid d**e construction and to poor maintenance and monitoring – usually through wired and/or manual means.
Below are some reasons why a wireless monitoring system is a key tool for the safety management of the embankments:
- Improves knowledge of the most critical potential failure mechanisms
- Detects situations that are likely to trigger a failure of the dam
- Serves as a tool for designing the dam’s growth
- Provides a sound basis for the establishment and implementation of the proper response in case of a failure involving human hazards
- Provides long-term monitoring with very little maintenance
Read more on how wireless monitoring systems improve the safety of tailings dams, in Geomotion Australia article below.
5 Ways that Wireless Monitoring Systems Improve the Safety of Tailings Dams Failures of tailings dams are one of the most hazardous processes that may occur and can cause extensive damage to life, property, and health. The mining industry has experienced several significant dam failures in recent history.

Landmark 81 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is an 81-storey apartment tower which is 462 metres high. It is the tallest building in Vietnam and 14th tallest in the world.
GLS Monitoring was engaged with Land Surveys to provide an integrated structural health monitoring system to maintain the vertical alignment of the building. An innovative approach, combining geodetic, structural and geotechnical sensing, measures the dynamic movements of the building as it propels upwards, and ensures its alignment at the highest levels of the build.
Tilt sensors were used to measure the real-time verticality of the building, strain gauges and precise levelling to measure settlement and shortening, and combined GNSS and TPS observations to control the verticality at the top of the building.
The speed of the build was what is known as the quickest floor cycle in the world, with one floor being built every three days.
An implementation and technical support team of four people were involved in this project. The Land Surveys team went to Vietnam to set up and install the monitoring system, then returned to Australia where they now manage the system remotely. GLS Monitoring and Land Surveys undertakes an audit of the system on a monthly basis.

Recent advancements in smart sensing technologies adopted by GLS Monitoring provides opportunities for long-term, continuous, real-time response measurement and health monitoring of airport pavement systems.
Pavement health monitoring, an extension of the structural health monitoring (SHM) concept, employs advanced technology to allow the assessment of the structural reliability and detection of structural changes in civil infrastructure, mainly of buildings and bridges. It is a critical tool for ensuring integrity and safety, detecting the evolution of damage, and estimating performance deterioration of civil infrastructures, to ultimately ensure the serviceability and safety of the structure.
Needs for airport pavement health monitoring can assist in pavement performance, maintenance, and long-term consolidation, and is an effective solution to prevent aircraft accidents and damages caused by poor pavement performance.
The successful implementation and operation of structural health monitoring will provide long term, continuous and real-time monitoring of pavement conditions, and guarantee the safety of the structure during its service life, which is crucial for accurate airport pavement life predictions.
