Do you struggle or squint significantly to see distant objects clearly? If so, you may have a common vision problem known as short-sightedness, myopia, or nearsightedness.👀

Myopia is a refractive error that occurs when the eye is too long, or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of on it. But don’t worry, there is a solution: PRK laser eye surgery.

PRK is a safe and effective procedure that can correct myopia by changing the shape of your cornea, giving you clear vision without glasses or contacts.✅

Do you know what the differences are between LASIK and PRK for laser eye surgery? 👀

LASIK and PRK are both effective laser eye surgery procedures that correct refractive errors by reshaping the cornea. The main difference is that LASIK creates a thin flap in the cornea, while PRK reshapes the surface of the cornea without creating a flap, making it a suitable option for people with thinner corneas or active lifestyles.

Ultimately, the choice between PRK or LASIK will depend on your personal circumstances. Want to know more about the procedures? Access the article on the Optilase blog and check out more information! https://optilase.com.au/the-difference-between-lasik-and-prk-laser-eye-surgery/

The misconception that astigmatism cannot be treated by laser eye surgery comes from the old days of laser eye surgery, when the equipment still had technological limitations for performing this type of procedure. But the truth is it’s been a common treatment for quite some time. 👁️

PRK laser eye surgery is the original form of laser refractive vision correction. It’s been in clinical practice for over 20 years and is a safe and effective treatment for astigmatism. During the procedure, a laser is used to remove a small amount of corneal tissue to correct the irregular curvature of the lens.

PRK surgery uses an excimer laser to reshape the surface of the cornea and, in this way, treat various vision conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

✅Myopia: The laser is used to flatten the cornea, allowing light to focus on the retina instead of in front of it.
✅Hyperopia: the cornea is steeper, allowing light to focus on the retina rather than in front of it.
✅Astigmatism: The laser is used to correct the asymmetry of the cornea.
✅Presbyopia: the laser adjusts one eye for near vision and the other for distance vision, resulting in monovision.

At Optilase, the entire procedure is performed using a state-of-the-art Wavelight ® EX500 excimer laser, so there is no need for scalpels, stitches or needles!

Strabismus refers to a condition in which the eyes do not remain parallel. If left untreated, it can cause double vision and/or a lazy eye (amblyopia), particularly in young children.

Furthermore, vision in the affected eye may gradually deteriorate. This is why seeking a permanent solution from childhood onwards is so important.

Optilase offers paediatric surgery for strabismus. We draw on the expertise of Dr Ward, who has over 30 years’ experience and was formerly Head of Department at Princess Margaret Children’s Hospital.
