As part of our learning about ‘people who help us’, focusing on different types of jobs in the community, we were lucky to have one of our enrolled children’s dads, who is a firefighter, visit the Kwila room for a special show and tell. Mark shared visual pictures and talked to the children about the important work firefighters do to help keep our community safe. The children enjoyed learning about the different parts of his uniform, including his everyday uniform and his special protective gear that can withstand extreme heat up to 600 degrees! He also showed us his two different helmets, and a range of different flashlights used to help firefighters see through smoke.

The children learned important fire safety messages, including not to be scared if they see a firefighter in full protective gear, as they are there to help. They learned different techniques the firefighter can use to rescue people and that if there is smoke or fire, they should get down low and crawl to safety. Thank you again to Mark for sharing his time and knowledge with us. It was a wonderful learning experience for everyone and the children loved it.

Creative Expression and Mark Making 🎨

Mark making is the foundation of early literacy and cognitive development. Long before children form letters, scribbles, shapes, and colorful patterns allow them to make their “thinking visible”. It is a vital, multi-dimensional process that enhances physical strength, emotional expression, and imaginative communication! 💭

Last week the Kwila children had the opportunity to explore mark making through different means: Grounded on the floor, painting on cardboard, not paper and having free range to move their body and paint! 🫟

We had super awesome conversation around weather and automobiles. The children also practiced their sharing skills with one and other! ✨

This week our Bamba children participated in a meaningful creative experience by painting kindness pebbles and stones using a variety of vibrant colours. The babies were encouraged to freely explore painting with both their fingers and brushes, supporting sensory exploration and creative expression.

This experience was connected to National Sorry Day and the beginning of Reconciliation Week, providing opportunities to introduce the children to important values such as kindness, friendship, caring, respect and togetherness in an age appropriate way.

Throughout the week, educators engaged the babies in conversations about being kind to others, helping friends, caring for our community and environment. Educators later added meaningful words representing these values onto the pebbles, and together a small group of babies chose special places within our communal garden to leave the kindness stones for others to discover.

This experience supported the children’s fine motor skills, creativity, sensory development and early language skills. It also encouraged social connection, teamwork, empathy and a sense of belonging while helping them begin to develop an understanding of respect, inclusion and connection to community through Reconciliation Week learning.
