Surging electric vehicle sales have sent lithium prices skyrocketing to record levels amid “panic buying” by the world’s battery manufacturers.
Australian miners are set to cash in on the soaring prices, despite production slowdowns by Covid-19 shutdowns and labour shortages.
Prices for lithium salts, lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, rose by between 400-500 % last year, and show no signs of slowing down as supplies struggle to keep up with demand.
Lithium-rich spodumene concentrate, an unrefined ore mined in Australia, is up roughly 480 % since the start of last year and nearly six times higher than September 2020 when the current cycle turned positive.
Western Australia is the world’s leading producer of spodumene, but miners say Covid-19 restrictions have hampered their ability to ramp up production to fully take advantage of the price boom.

The joint owners of the giant Greenbushes lithium mine in Western Australia’s South West are planning a $1.4 billion expansion, regulatory filings in Hong Kong have revealed.

The new investment will result in a near doubling of production volumes at Greenbushes, which is already the world’s largest producer of lithium-bearing spodumene concentrate.

How the Government Stimulus package impacts:
Individuals
• Establishment of time limited Corona virus supplement paid at a rate of $550.00/fortnight. Paid to existing and new recipients of Job seeker payment, youth allowance job seeker, parenting payment, farm household allowance and special benefit. Total payment of $1500 p/f
• Additional $750.00 stimulus payment to eligible recipients to be paid after 13 July 2020. This is in addition to the first payment to be paid after 31st March 2020.
• Access to up to $10,000 of superannuation in 2019-2020 financial year and another $10,000 of superannuation in 2020-2021 financial year tax free, speak to us in regards to early release requirements.
• Deeming rates for Centrelink pension payments may mean that once ineligible clients may now be eligible. Please speak to your financial advisers about whether you may now be eligible.

What should I be thinking about right now?

1. Preserve your cash at all costs.
2. Protect your assets - Put in place Wills and other estate planning measures.
3. Contact your Bank Manager to talk to them about repayment relief.
