Arts therapy is a psychotherapy that is action-based.
This means that we have, other than the talking, other tools and mediums that we can use for our self-expression.
It is about the relationship, deepening that relationship through a felt sense. And that felt sense we can create through using and adopting other materials that we use in that process of self-exploration.
When we use arts therapy as an action-based approach, it is about creating a felt sense. We use a lot of different materials that we can touch and feel and actually activate our senses. This gives us an understanding of the relationship that we are building between client and therapist and can deepen our understanding of a particular issue.
It serves a broad range of issues and it is really about giving another way or fostering another way of feeling communication. For example, through the touch and activation of our senses, when we doing something tactile and feeling something with our fingers, our whole body.
Art therapy is definitely NOT something particular for people who come with artistic skills into the session.
It is something that anyone can do. Anyone can actually benefit from art therapy because it fosters your imagination and your creative side. It fosters a rethinking and a reprocessing of issues that you're experiencing in your daily life and creates different perspectives.
