The Flavours of Indonesia.
Our journey through the Indonesian archipelago has been nothing short of delicious. From the buzz of Kupang to the laid-back surf vibes of Rote, the untouched beauty of Sawu, and the wild magic of Rinca and Labuan Bajo; Each island has served up its own unique flavour.
Every stop has been a feast for the senses, and weโ€™re savouring every moment.

Sunset routine was a little different; we got invited over by one of the neighbouring yachts who was hosting a get together in the bay.
The hospitality and genuine kindness of the people in the sailing community that we have met so far has been phenomenal.
It was great hearing shared stories of boat life, amazing adventures into remote locations, and living life to the fullest.

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Ballooning spider takeover in Darwin!

Today, we were hit with a wave of tiny flying spiders, drifting through the air on silk and weaving webs all over the rigging. Zoom in and youโ€™ll see fine threads stretched between the lines.

Last week, they spun so much web that they actually stopped our wind instruments from working, and we had to clean everything off!

Turns out theyโ€™re ballooning spiders... harmless little guys who float through the air during calm weather. Cool to watch, but not ideal when you're relying on sensors to sail.

๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ Fun Facts:
โ€ข Charles Darwin saw spiders landing on the HMS Beagle, far out at sea, and was baffled.
โ€ข Ballooning spiders have been found as high as 5 km (16,000 ft) in the atmosphere.
โ€ข They can sense and launch using the Earthโ€™s electric field, not just wind. Literally floating on static vibes.

So yep, spiders really do travel by air. Tiny aeronauts hitching rides on invisible currents.

They might meet Mortein if they stay around !!

At least twice a week, we cook up Ramen Noodles. It's a fast, budget-friendly meal that actually hits the spot? This easy ramen noodle hack is the answer! All you need is a pack of instant ramen, an egg, soy sauce, and green onions (optional but highly recommended for added flavour). In just 10 minutes, youโ€™ll have a steaming bowl of upgraded noodles that taste way better than basic!

๐Ÿ”ฅ How to Make It:
1๏ธโƒฃ Boil ramen noodles as usual.
2๏ธโƒฃ Crack an egg in the pot while it's boiling โ€” poach it right in there! (We didnt have any eggs as Darwin has none at the moment)
3๏ธโƒฃ Add a splash of soy sauce, garlic powder, and chilli flakes if you like heat.
4๏ธโƒฃ Top with chopped fried onions or anything youโ€™ve got on hand! We've added a spicy dried seaweed snack that tastes great here.

Itโ€™s savoury, satisfying, and costs less than $2. Perfect after a busy day when you can't be bothered putting much effort in! ๐Ÿฅข๐Ÿ’ธ

We love cooking on board, so having good-quality meat is a must. Just stocked up the freezer with a great selection. While we do enjoy making the occasional complex dish, sometimes simple is best. The other night, it was just sausages for dinner, and honestly, they hit the spot.

๐Ÿงบ Yesterday was laundry day!

Weโ€™ve got a small 2.5kg mini washer on board Culina II, but when we want to save water or take a break, we head ashore if facilities are nearby.

Here anchored in front of Darwin Sailing Club, the Yacht Club offers a $20/week membership for cruisers, which gives you access to:๏ฟฝ
โœ”๏ธ Laundry ($5 a load)๏ฟฝ
โœ”๏ธ Showers & toilets๏ฟฝ
โœ”๏ธ Freshwater hose๏ฟฝ
โœ”๏ธ Rubbish drop-off
Itโ€™s a good excuse to jump in the dinghy, grab a coffee, and sit on the grass while the washingโ€™s on and watch the locals out learning to sail. Not a bad way to spend a few hours. โ›ตโ˜•๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿฅฃ MAKING YOGHURT ON BOARD AND LOVING IT

Weโ€™ve started making our own yoghurt on Culina II, and itโ€™s honestly a game changer. We picked up the EASIYO yoghurt maker, which is super easy to use and has excellent results.

You can either:
โœ… Use their packet mixes
โœ… Or do what we do: save 4โ€“5 tablespoons of yoghurt and mix it with powdered milk (saves heaps of space on board)

We started doing this because weโ€™re heading to remote places where yoghurt might be hard to find. One batch takes overnight to set and lasts about 3 days, so we make two batches a week.

๐Ÿ’ก Perfect for breakfast, smoothies, or a quick, healthy snack at anchor.

Spaghetti Bologneseโ€‹ 20/05/2025

๐Ÿ Spaghetti Bolognese on board โ€“ simple, hearty, and always a win.

Yesterdayโ€™s lunch was a classic: rich, slow-cooked spaghetti Bolognese made right here on Culina II. One 500g pack of mince lasts us three meals, so itโ€™s not just tasty โ€” itโ€™s budget-friendly, easy to reheat, and perfect for days when we want comfort without the fuss.

Great for lunches underway or an easy dinner at anchor.
