This Mental Health Month, we're proud to feature the voices of our dedicated Allied Health Professionals and team members at Generation Care. Through sharing their valuable insights and experiences, we aim to raise awareness and promote mental well-being within our community.
We asked Brendan King, our physiotherapist, for his advice to anyone struggling with mental health, and he emphasised the importance of finding the right fit in an allied health professional. "It takes time to find the right health professional that fits with you. If sessions aren't helping or you're not connecting with your practitioner, it's important to discuss this openly with them."
Join us in continuing the conversation and making a meaningful impact together.

Today is World Parkinson's Day, a day dedicated to disseminating knowledge to spread awareness and promote research for finding a cure for people who live with this neurological disorder.
Parkinsonโs is caused by the loss of nerve cells (neurons) in the part of the brain called the substantia nigra. This loss of cells results in a drop in dopamine levels. Consequently, this leads to symptoms of Parkinsonโs like tremors and slow movement.
Diseases like this are why an integrated approach to allied health is so vital for the day to day life of someone living with a disorder that affects both physical and mental health.

According to the World Health Organisation, over 20% of adults aged 60 and over are living with a mental or neurological disorder and accounts for 6.6% of all disability among people over 60 years.

Humans are social creatures. We live with other people, in families, communities and other groups. Throughout our lives we create social connections and networks, and we rely on those connections for support, for a sense of identity and for a sense of self-worth.
These social connections are often disrupted or are substantially changed when people become older. This can have negative consequences. So, how can you help older people around you?
- Help them set a routine
- Encourage kindness
- Encourage or help facilitate socialisation
- Encourage them to get involved in the community
- Prompt them to reframe negative thoughts

Moving into a nursing home or other residential aged care facility can be a critical life experience. It involves change.
Even at the best of times, some people (because of personality, self-beliefs, or other reasons), can find it difficult to cope with change.
The transition or change into living in a residential aged care facility carries with it several specific stresses which may make the change even more difficult. These types of changes, and stresses, include:
โ Loss of oneโs home
โChanging relationships.
โ Change of status
โ Deteriorating physical health and mental health
โ Loss of independence
โ Losses of autonomy, identity, and dignity
