From Barefoot to Boots: Awer Mabil's Journey from Refugee Camp to Two World Cups

Australian football star Awer Mabil has reflected on his remarkable journey from growing up in a refugee camp to representing Australia at two FIFA World Cups.

Born in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya to South Sudanese parents, Mabil said his early experiences continue to shape his commitment to giving back to disadvantaged communities.

Remembering the challenges he faced as a child, Mabil said many young people in refugee camps lack access to basic sporting equipment, including football boots. Inspired by his own journey, he launched an initiative to collect used football boots and distribute them to children and young people living in refugee camps.

Mabil said the project aims to provide opportunities for aspiring footballers who may otherwise be unable to participate in the sport they love.

His story is one of resilience and determination from playing football barefoot in a refugee camp to wearing the green and gold on the world's biggest stage. Through his charitable efforts, Mabil continues to use his success to support the next generation of young refugees and help them pursue their dreams

"In an effort to survive, we offered them food, hoping they would take it and leave us unharmed."

Reflecting on the events of 16 May 1983, Aguer Barac Kuot Rual shares a powerful testimony of courage, faith, and survival. What began as a desperate attempt to avoid danger became a moment of divine protection, as the attackers' attention shifted away from harming them.

A moving story of resilience and gratitude that reminds us of the strength of hope in the face of adversity.

Speaking about the incident that occurred on May 16 1983, Aguer Barac Kuot Rual said, as a means of survival, we tried to distract them by offering food, hoping they would take it and leave us unharmed. We are deeply grateful to God for His protection, as their attention shifted to the food rather than harming us, giving us a chance to survive.

'The food we offered helped save our lives. I thank God for touching their hearts and turning their attention away from violence. Instead of carrying out their threats, they chose to take the food and leave us in peace,' said Aguer Barac Kuot Rual."
