8 years Ago, Deng Garang Bul arrived in Alice Springs after completing a 1,500-kilometre walk from Darwin that took 25 days. Bul undertook the challenging journey in support of the charity IHOPE, aiming to raise awareness and funds for those in need.
“I walked for 25 days, about six hours each day, and the journey was not easy because of the weather, cars and trucks,” Bul said. He said the first few days were particularly difficult as he navigated steep climbs and descents, while the heat caused his feet to swell, making it difficult to wear his shoes.

Despite the physical challenges, Bul said the support he received along the way was overwhelming and encouraging. He said members of the community offered him and his camera operator and driver free meals and accommodation during the journey. In Alice Springs, CatholicCare’s local branch organised a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark his arrival, while local young people and media organisations also welcomed him to the town.

Eight years ago, Deng Garang Bul embarked on a 1,500-kilometre journey from Darwin to Alice Springs in an effort to raise funds for charity. Walking in support of IHOPE, Bul undertook the challenging journey to raise money for South Sudanese orphans, widows and people with disabilities back home. He also aimed to promote educational opportunities for widowed women and men in South Sudan and Australia. At the time, Bul expected the walk from Darwin to Alice Springs to take approximately 18 days. Here is what he had to say at the time.
