Did you know? Clinical trials across Australia are testing new therapies that may help protect the insulin-producing beta cells targeted in type 1 diabetes.
Preserving even a small number of beta cells could make type 1 diabetes easier to manage, reduce hypos, and improve quality of life.
Trials are available for people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and those identified through screening as being at risk.
For more information on these clinical trials, visit ATIC or their website https://atic.svi.edu.au

DKA is a a serious condition that happens when there is not enough insulin in the body. In many cases of new type 1 diabetes, the body has already lost most of its insulin-producing ability before anyone realises something is wrong. So, often people are in DKA before they know that they have type 1 diabetes.

Avoiding DKA at diagnosis is important because DKA is dangerous and requires emergency treatment in hospital. It is also physically and emotionally traumatic.

Knowing your risk allows type 1 diabetes to be diagnosed before the emergency of DKA happens so that:
• Emergency medical treatment is not required
• Insulin treatment can start calmly and safely
• People can explore their options for therapies or clinical trials of therapies to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes.
