Not all play mats are made from the same materials.

Many concerns around elevated formamide levels have been linked to some EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) foam play mats.

Formamide is classified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant, which is why parents are increasingly paying attention to the materials used in children’s products.

💛 Our suggestions for families:

✔️ If you have timber, laminate or tiled floors, you may not need a foam play mat at all. A clean floor with regular vacuuming is often perfectly suitable for everyday play.

✔️ If you’d still like a soft play area, consider cotton play mats, quilted play mats or washable cotton rugs made from natural fibres.

✔️ Before purchasing a play mat, ask:
• What material is it made from?
• Does the brand provide material and safety information?
• Are there independent certifications or test reports available?

Sometimes, the safest choice isn’t buying more products—it’s understanding the materials our children play on every day. 💛

Why We Prefer to Avoid Melamine Plates for Children 🍽️

Melamine plates have been popular for years.

They’re lightweight, colourful, hard to break, and often marketed as a practical option for families.

But they’re not a material we actively seek out for our own children.

Why?

Melamine is a type of plastic resin. While it’s generally considered suitable for food contact under normal conditions, there are some important limitations that many parents aren’t aware of.

🌿 Not designed for high heat

Melamine can become less stable when exposed to very hot foods or high temperatures. This is why many manufacturers recommend against using melamine in microwaves.

🌿 Scratches and wear matter

Over time, children’s plates are dropped, scraped with cutlery, stacked, washed, and reused thousands of times. As the surface wears, it can become more difficult to keep in good condition.

🌿 Not all feeding moments are cold meals

From hot porridge and pasta to reheated leftovers, children’s meals are often served warm. We generally prefer materials that are better suited to regular contact with hot foods.

🌿 Long-term durability

When choosing feeding gear, we look for products that can last through multiple children and years of daily use without needing frequent replacement.

That’s why many families choose alternatives such as:

✔ Stainless steel
✔ Glass (for older children)
✔ High-quality silicone from trusted manufacturers

This isn’t about fear.

It’s about understanding the materials we use every day and making informed choices for our families.

At Hello Charlie, we believe parents deserve transparent information about what products are made from—not just how cute they look on the shelf. 💛

Sometimes the safest choice isn’t the newest trend. It’s simply choosing materials that have stood the test of time.

We Still Use Muslin Wraps Every Day 💛

Our kids have long outgrown being swaddled.

But we still use muslin wraps almost every single day.

Not as wraps.

As towels.

After bath time, they're the first thing we reach for.

Why?

🌿 Lightweight and gentle on skin

🌿 Surprisingly absorbent

🌿 Quick to dry between uses

🌿 Compact enough to throw in a nappy bag, beach bag or suitcase

🌿 Soft enough for babies, toddlers and even bigger kids

We've been using muslin wraps since our kids were born, and years later they're still one of the most-used items in our home. From bath time and beach trips to sleepovers and holidays, they continue to earn their place in our daily routine. 💛

When choosing muslin wraps, we always recommend cotton or organic cotton where possible.

Many parents are surprised to learn that some towels and cloths contain microfibre. While microfibre can absorb moisture quickly, it's still a synthetic material made from plastic fibres.

For children with sensitive skin, natural fibres like cotton are often a gentler choice.

Sometimes the best baby products aren't the ones you use for a few months.

They're the ones you're still reaching for years later.

For us, muslin wraps are definitely one of them. 💛

🎨 Toddlers don’t just paint with their hands.

They paint with their fingers.
They paint with their clothes.
They paint with the table.
And sometimes… they paint with their mouths. 😅

That’s why choosing art supplies isn’t just about colours and creativity.

It’s also about safety.

When choosing paints, crayons and colouring products for young children, here are a few things we suggest looking for:

✓ Clearly labelled non-toxic ingredients
✓ Products designed specifically for young children
✓ Water-based formulas where possible
✓ Brands that openly share safety information
✓ Products that comply with recognised safety standards

Not all art supplies are created equal, and “washable” doesn’t always mean “non-toxic”.

At Hello Charlie, we believe parents deserve better information so they can make confident choices for their families.

Because creativity should be messy.
Not risky. 💛

What’s Really Inside Your Child’s Favourite Soft Toy? 🧸💛

Most soft toys look soft and cuddly on the outside.

But what they’re made from can be a very different story.

The majority of soft toys today use polyester fabric and polyester filling — materials derived from plastic.

At Hello Charlie, we’ve always found it surprisingly difficult to source soft toys made from more natural materials.

🌿 Why we care about the outer fabric first

The outer fabric is what your child touches, cuddles, sleeps with and sometimes even chews on.

That’s why we believe the fabric matters most.

Organic cotton is:
✓ Naturally soft and breathable
✓ Grown without synthetic pesticides
✓ Gentler on sensitive skin
✓ Renewable and biodegradable

🌱 And what about the filling?

If you can choose natural materials for both, even better.

Some alternatives to polyester filling include:
• Organic cotton
• Corn fibre (PLA)
• Recycled cherry seeds or other natural seed fillings
• Wool

These materials aren’t always easy to find, which is why products using them often remain the exception rather than the rule.

We’re not saying every family needs to replace every soft toy.

But when choosing a new little companion for your child, it’s worth looking beyond the cute face and checking what it’s made from.

Because what touches your child’s skin matters. 💛

Eczema Isn't Just Dry Skin 💛

If your little one struggles with eczema, you’ll know it’s about much more than dry skin.

The itch.
The scratching.
The sleepless nights.
The frustration of trying product after product without knowing what's helping — or what's making things worse.

While every child is different, many parents find that managing eczema isn't just about what you put on the skin, but also reducing exposure to potential irritants wherever possible.

🌿 Choosing gentle skincare with fewer unnecessary ingredients
🌿 Avoiding heavily fragranced products
🌿 Using soft, breathable natural fibres
🌿 Being mindful of harsh detergents and household chemicals

There’s no single solution for eczema, but small changes can sometimes make a big difference.

At Hello Charlie, we believe parents deserve clear information and products that are thoughtfully chosen — because when your child is uncomfortable, every little bit of support matters.

The Best Toy Doesn't Tell Them What To Do

Not all toys need flashing lights, buttons or batteries to keep little ones engaged 💛

In fact, some of the best toys do less.

A wooden block can become a tower, a castle, a race car garage, or even a birthday cake. A simple silk scarf can turn into a superhero cape, a picnic blanket, or a magic flying carpet.

This is the beauty of open-ended play 🌿

Unlike toys with one purpose, open-ended toys leave room for imagination, creativity and problem-solving. There’s no "right" way to play — and that's exactly the point.

At Hello Charlie, we're big believers in toys that grow with your child:
✨ Wooden blocks
✨ Magnetic tiles
✨ Loose parts
✨ Dolls and soft toys
✨ Play silks
✨ Natural pretend play toys

Because childhood doesn't need more instructions.

It needs more imagination.

💛 What makes a nappy "premium"?

Recently, we've seen a number of parents discussing rash concerns with various nappy brands, including some supermarket brands and newer premium-looking options.

Of course, every baby is different.

A nappy that works beautifully for one child may not work for another.

And to be fair, supermarket brands aren't automatically lower quality.

We shop at supermarkets almost every day ourselves.

But when you're managing thousands of products across countless categories, it's simply difficult to dedicate the same level of assessment and ongoing review to every individual product.

That's why, at Hello Charlie, we've always taken a slightly different approach.

Rather than asking:

"Is it soft?"

or

"Does the packaging look premium?"

we ask:

🌱 What certifications does it carry?
🌱 What independent testing has been completed?
🌱 How transparent is the manufacturer?
🌱 Has the brand consistently maintained those standards over time?

It's one of the reasons we've proudly stocked Bambo Nature for more than 10 years.

Not because we believe it's the perfect nappy for every baby.

But because we appreciate the level of transparency behind it.

Bambo Nature carries certifications including:

✓ Nordic Swan Ecolabel
✓ FSC® Certified Materials
✓ Asthma Allergy Nordic
✓ Dermatologically Tested

For us, those certifications provide another layer of confidence when recommending products to families.

At the end of the day, every baby is different.

But when we're choosing products for our own children, we tend to look beyond marketing claims and focus on the standards sitting behind the product. 💛

As parents, we’ve all seen it.

The toy.
The comforter.
The teether.
The random object they somehow found under the couch.

Babies explore the world with their mouths. It’s completely natural and an important part of their development.

Rather than trying to stop it entirely, we can be a little more thoughtful about what they’re chewing, sucking, cuddling and carrying around all day.

That’s why we love products made from:

🌿 Natural rubber instead of soft plastics

🧸 Organic cotton instead of synthetic fibres

🎨 Water-based dyes instead of unnecessary chemical coatings

💛 Materials chosen with little mouths in mind

No product needs to be perfect.

But when a favourite comfort toy becomes a daily companion (and a daily chew toy), choosing safer, simpler materials can be one small decision that makes us feel a little better.

Because childhood should be about exploring the world — not worrying about what’s in it.

💛 One of the beautiful things about parenting is that we get to make thoughtful choices for our little ones.

Most children don't think about what their bottle is made from.

Or what material their lunchbox is made from.

They're simply focused on enjoying their meal, exploring the world, and being kids.

But as parents, we often find ourselves asking questions like:

🌱 Is there a more natural option?
🌱 Is there a more durable option?
🌱 Is there a material I'd feel good using every day?

Not because we're trying to be perfect.

But because when it comes to our children, even small choices can feel meaningful.

At Hello Charlie, we've always believed that safer, simpler and more thoughtfully made products can help make those choices a little easier.

Because parenting isn't about perfection.

It's about doing the best we can with what we know today. 💛
