Antique, Vintage, or Retro? A Guide to Furniture Sourcing Terms - Creating Positive Spaces 10/06/2026

🪑 Antique, Vintage, Retro, Replica or Reproduction... what's the difference?

Recently, while working with a client, we found ourselves discussing whether a furniture piece was vintage or antique. It made me realise that many of the terms we use when buying furniture and home dĂŠcor are often misunderstood.

Did you know:
✔️ Antique furniture is generally over 100 years old.
✔️ Vintage furniture is typically between 20 and 99 years old.
✔️ Retro furniture refers to new pieces inspired by past styles.
✔️ Replicas and reproductions aren't the same thing!

Understanding these terms can help you make more informed decisions when sourcing furniture, whether you're furnishing a home, looking for a statement piece, or trying to shop more sustainably.

I've unpacked the key differences in my latest blog.

Have you ever purchased a piece thinking it was one thing, only to discover it was something else? Let me know in the comments!

8 Questions to Ask Before Buying Furniture or Storage - Creating Positive Spaces 24/02/2026

It’s so easy to jump straight into buying new furniture or storage.

A new bookshelf. A sideboard. More drawers. Better “solutions.”

But before you click add to cart, it’s worth pausing.

Over the years, I’ve seen how costly (and frustrating) it can be to buy pieces that don’t quite fit — whether that’s the space, your lifestyle, or the actual problem you’re trying to solve.
