Mid last year, I started experimenting with drawing my PUGalicious range of Pug inspired cushions and using embroidery to bring them to life. They were snapped up almost a soon as I'd made them!

A few of my lovely customers asked if I offered embroidery services - names on towels etc, and that was the start of my adventure into embroidery art and custom embroidery services.

A very satisfied customer recently gave me free rein to produce a baby quilt with an ocean theme for her new great-niece to enjoy as a baby and a child.

We just had to share the latest fur-baby Memento. This cushion was a gift for a friend who had a big birthday to celebrate. She and her hubby lost their precious pooches in 2019, just three weeks apart, after having them for 14 years.

Thanks to the great feedback we received that it was very difficult to find our business online, we've changed our trading name to "Quilt Us Australia".

As it turns out, while there are no other businesses registered as Sew Sensational in Australia, there are plenty worldwide!

We still offer the same exciting range of quilt patterns and services and think that our new name sums us up very nicely - we are about quilting, about coming together ("us") and we are proudly Australian.

Today we spent a glorious morning out on the water. Friends have a boat and invited us to come aboard. We sailed through the Dawesville Cut and spent a short period off the coast before heading east and dropping anchor in the Peel Inlet. There were cormorants aplenty and as I was gazing at the spectacular scenery and admiring all the boats on the water, I recalled George.

George the pelican is often sited at South Yunderup which lies east of Mandurah where the Murray River enters the Peel Inlet (Collins Pool). Justine took a stunning photo of George which was the inspiration for the "Gone Fishin'" wall quilt.

The business cards have arrived and tomorrow I'll be approaching the local vet practices to leave a flyer and business cards to promote the Fur-baby Mementos. Wish me luck and please let friends and family know all about it!

I attended a fantastic patchworking course last weekend at a local fabric and quilting business, Classic Stitches. Participating in a patchwork course is such a great way to appreciate how many gifted people there are in the world of all backgrounds and ages. The group was small and all of the participants were experienced patchworkers with impeccable sewing skills. The technique we were focusing on was fabric collage - such good fun! Judith, the teacher, presented the group with examples that showcased how versatile this technique is. I had gone along with an idea in mind however, the approach that Judith was teaching was a bit different to how I usually do things, so I threw caution to the wind and had a go. As a fabric artist, I feel that it is important to have a broad palette of skills and techniques to utilise and share through my patterns. Every participant's project was unique and the results were simply stunning.

I used the fabric collage technique to create a cushion cover of 'Bazza'. This little fellow is a Jack Russell x Shih-Tzu and has so much s***k and character. At 15 years of age, he is now a senior citizen and moves a little more slowly than he use to. The fabric collage technique is enhanced with the detailed stitching that is added - it gives the finished item a realistic look.I am now keen to pursue creating Fur-baby Mementos and can be commissioned to create a bespoke pieces.

As a newbie to business, let alone online business, I decided to take a gamble and to launch the business with a small range of products available. My goal is to add at least one new pattern a week - so watch this space as the range will be expanding. My love is fabric art where you create images with fabric and some of my work is complex. Justine offered some sage advice ... keep it simple at the start, so I have. The Sparkling Sardines lap throw and cushion cover are both easy projects. For an experienced patchworker, or quilter, they can both be constructed in a day. I have included a rating scale in my patterns; one thread spool for a beginner, three thread spools for intermediate and five thread spools for experience patchworkers.

I have 100s of quilt and soft furnishing designs waiting to publish, however, it takes a lot of time to write them and have them ready to publish. Check out my future blog on how my patterns are so easy to follow.

We are 'sew' excited! The 'Sew Sensational' website has been launched and this journey into being a small business owner is really taking shape.

This is a call out for all those who may be feeling the need to do something new, to make a change, to pursue a personal passion.

Twelve years ago I had a yearning to do something different - but the challenge was knowing what. Do you know that feeling? With family commitments I remained in teaching, a career that I love, and then I reached the big 5-0!

Now I'm not saying I had a midlife crisis, but honestly, I stopped and reflected on my life and the amazing experiences that I had and I began thinking ... what else do I want to try? What new adventures are out there waiting to be had? What have I always wanted to do but haven't yet?

Well, with my gorgeous kids all grown up and pursuing their own paths, with an amazing husband beside me to share adventures, I decided it was time to be selfish! So I took a leap of faith and voila - Sew Sensational came into being.

I want to thank my sisters, my family and my friends for their advice, encouragement and support.
