The human being is not a fixed thing. It is a process.

Sri Aurobindo spent decades mapping what he called the supramental transformation, the evolutionary movement of consciousness beyond the mental level into something that the current human form cannot yet fully contain. His teaching was not mystical escapism. It was a precise diagnosis: the human being as it currently exists is not the endpoint of evolution. It is a transitional form. The container was never meant to be permanent. It was meant to be outgrown.

The Hermetic tradition expressed this as the expansion of the vessel, the alchemical work of refining the inner substance until the original container can no longer hold what has been developed within it. The egg must crack for the bird to emerge. The cocoon must be destroyed for the butterfly to exist. In every tradition that has taken transformation seriously, the dissolution of the form is not the tragedy. Remaining in it past the point of capacity is.

Jung described the process of individuation as one that the ego cannot complete while remaining intact. The persona, the mask, the social self, the managed identity, must eventually give way to something larger. The Self is not an expanded ego. It is what the ego dissolves into when it stops insisting on its own supremacy. This is what Aurobindo called the crack: the moment when the container has been stretched to its limit, and what was inside is finally free to become what it actually is.

The Vedantic tradition speaks of Brahman, the infinite, as the true nature of every self. The Atman, the individual soul, is not separate from this infinity. The apparent separation is the container. The work of life is to make that container thin enough, transparent enough, wide enough, that the distinction between the finite and the infinite finally stops making sense.
